Education and College Years

He made 22 of 27 (81.5%) field goals and was 50-52 on extra points during his sophomore year in 2014. Moreover, he matched a then-career-high with four field goals against Stanford on October 18.

Gonzalez scored on 26 of 34 (76.5%) field goals and converted all 52 extra-point attempts during his junior season in 2015. He matched the Pac-12 record with six field goals against California on November 28. In the third quarter, he passed Luis Zendejas (380) to become the school’s all-time leading scorer. He made 23-of-25 (92.0%) field goals and only missed one of 40 extra-point attempts during his senior year in 2016.

Professional Career

Cleveland Browns

Zane Gonzalez was picked by the Cleveland Browns in the seventh round (224th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft. The club signed him to a four-year, $2.48 million contract with a signing bonus of $89,156 in May 2017.

During his rookie season in 2017, he showcased his strong leg and accuracy, although he had some ups and downs. He made 15 of 20 field goal attempts and 25 of 26 extra-point attempts. Despite a few missed kicks, he displayed promise and potential.

In 2018, Gonzalez had a more challenging season. He struggled with consistency, and his performance became a subject of scrutiny. During the first two games of the season, Gonzalez missed some critical kicks, including a potential game-winning field goal against the New Orleans Saints in Week 2. As a result, the Browns decided to release him.

Arizona Cardinals

After being released by the Browns, he was signed to the Arizona Cardinals practice squad in November 2018. He played for the Cardinals from 2017 to 2020. On November 26, 2018, he was promoted to the active roster as a result of Phil Dawson’s injury. He recorded two field goals and extra points in a Week 13 20-17 win over the Green Bay Packers on December 2, 2018, including the 44-yard go-ahead field goal that gave the Cardinals the victory. In April 2020, he re-signed with the Cardinals. On December 19, 2020, he was placed on injured reserve. Meanwhile, he was released on March 5, 2021, by the team.

Detroit Lions

On August 10, 2021, he signed with the Detroit Lions. Later, on August 31, 2021, he was released by the club and the next day, he re-signed with the practice squad.

Carolina Panthers

Gonzalez was signed off the Lions’ practice squad by the Carolina Panthers on September 14, 2021. In Week 8, he made all four of his field goal attempts and scored 13 points in the Panthers’ 19-13 win over the Falcons, earning NFC Special Teams Player of the Week. He had another perfect game in Week 10, converting all four field goals in a 34-10 win over the Cardinals.

He suffered a quad injury in warm-ups against the Buffalo Bills in week 15 and was placed on injured reserve after the game, effectively ending his season. Moreover, he signed a one-year contract extension with the Panthers on March 9, 2022. He was placed on injured reserve on August 30, 2022, after injuring his quad during the final preseason game while warming up, and he missed the entire season.

San Francisco 49ers

The Panthers traded Gonzalez to the San Francisco 49ers on March 24, 2023, in exchange for a conditional swap of late-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.
