Early Life and Childhood

Vitalik Buterin was born on January 31, 1994, in Kolomna, Russia. He is 29 years old and is under the astrological sign, Aquarius. He holds Russian-Canadian nationality and his full name is Vitaly Dmitrievich Buterin.

His father’s name is Dmitriy Buterin and his mother’s name is Natalia Ameline. His father is an entrepreneur, mentor, blockchain investor, and computer scientist, and her mother on the other hand, is a senior finance executive with multi-industry experience.

Both of his parents are educated and have master’s degrees as well. Buterin has two younger half-sisters from his dad’s marriage to Maia Buterin and their names are Misha and Katya Buterin.

His family moved to Canada when Vitalik was six years old. When he was in grade three of elementary school in Canada, he was placed into a class for gifted children and was drawn to mathematics, programming, and economics.

He then went on to attend The Abelard School and was able to learn about Bitcoin when he was 17 years old. After high school, he attended the University of Waterloo where he took advanced courses and was a research assistant for cryptographer Ian Goldberg.

In the year 2012, he was able to win a bronze medal in the International Olympiad in Informatics in Italy. Buterin dropped out of university in the year 2014 when he was awarded a grant of $100K from the Thiel Fellowship.

It was a scholarship created by venture capitalist Peter Thiel. He then went to work on Ethereum full-time. Also in 2018, he was able to receive an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Basel on the occasion of the Dies Academicus.

Career and Professional Life

Vitalik Buterin started writing for a publication, Bitcoin Weekly in the year 2011. It was after meeting a person on a Bitcoin forum with the aim of earning Bitcoin. He went on to write for the site until it shut down soon thereafter due to insufficient revenue.

After he began writing for a new print publication called Bitcoin Magazine. It was the position that Buterin would accept as the first co-founder, and contribute to as a leading writer. And, Bitcoin Magazine in 2012 later began publishing a print edition and has been referred to as the first serious publication dedicated to cryptocurrencies.

Buterin is also the inventor of Ethereum and first described it in a white paper in the year 2013. The Ethereum white paper circulated and interest grew in the new protocol in late 2013 and early of the year 2014. He went on to deliver a 25-minute speech, describing the general-purpose global computer operating on a decentralized permissionless network.

And ending with potential uses for Ethereum that ranged from crop insurance to decentralized exchanges to DAOs. He also stated that he was driven to create decentralized money because his World of Warcraft character was nerfed, specifically by patch 3.1.0.

Likewise, he has contributed as a developer to other open-source software projects including DarkWallet, Bitcoin Python libraries, and the cryptocurrency marketplace site Egora. He even met with President Vladimir Putin when Buterin recognized the economic and political relevance of the Ethereum enterprise for his native Russia.

Vitalik also came into contact with economist Glen Weyl. The two then went on to write a manifesto Liberation Through Radical Decentralization. They highlighted the common ground between Buterin’s work on cryptocurrencies and Weyl’s work on market-based solutions to social problems.

Vitalik Buterin has spoken out against the incursion and supported Ukraine since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. He then donated crypto to projects supporting the country and endorsed projects helping Ukraine through “crypto philanthropy”. He has made a lot of donations through his crypto and Ether.

Furthermore, the awards and recognition he received so far include the Thiel Fellowship, the World Technology Award in the IT Software category, the Fortune 40 under 40 list, the Forbes 30 under 30 list, Fortune the Ledger 40 under 40 list, the University of Basel Honorary doctorate, and Time 100 as well.
