Early Life
Ueli Steck was born in Langnau im Emmental, Switzerland, on the 4th of October 1976. At the age of 40, he passed away and had a birth sign of Libra. he holds Swiss nationality while his ethnic background is unknown.
He was born to his father Max Steck while his mother’s name is unknown. There is very little information about his early life and childhood. However, he has had a strong interest in mountaineering, trekking, and other adventurous activities since his childhood.
In terms of his education and qualifications, he has not provided any information; it appears that he has chosen a profession over a formal education.
Death
On 30 April 2017, he died after being killed in an avalanche on Mount Everest in Nuptse, Nepal, aged 40.
Professional Career
At the age of 17, Ueli Steck climbed to the 9th difficulty rating (UIAA). As an 18-year-old, he climbed the Eiger’s North Face and the Bonatti Pillar in the Mont Blanc mountain. In June 2004, he and Stephan Siegrist climbed the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau in under 25 hours.
Furthermore, in 2007, he achieved his first speed record on the North Face of the Eiger, climbing it in 3 hours and 54 minutes. In the following year, he broke his own record by 2 hours 47 minutes 33 seconds. In 2008, he stopped climbing Mount Annapurna because of an avalanche hazard.
Steck was involved in the “Project Himalaya,” an initiative to climb all 82 peaks in the Himalayas over 4,000 meters. He aimed to accomplish this without using supplemental oxygen and within five years.
Moreover, he was the first to solo climb Annapurna’s South Face (though this is contested by others) and established speed records on the Alps’ North Face Alps. He attempted Mount Everest multiple times and was well-known for his desire to conquer the world’s greatest peaks as quickly as possible. In 2012, he climbed Everest without oxygen.
In 2015, he completed the “Alpine Trilogy,” which consists of a series of challenging Alpine climbs. The trio includes Matterhorn, Eiger, and Grandes Jorasses climbs in a single season.
Awards
Steck got the Eiger Award in 2008 for his climbing efforts, and he was awarded the Piolet d’Or, the “Oscar of Mountaineering,” twice, in 2009 and 2014, for his first solo ascent of Annapurna. In 2010, he won the Karl Unterkircher Award for his climbing versatility. He won the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in the year 2015.
