He relocated to Sveriges Television and directed the 1990 TV series “Ikas TV-kalas” a children’s television show starring Ika Nord, who would later appear in Tomas’s 2008 film “Let the Right One In.”
In 1994, he directed the TV series “Bert,” another TV production based on the Bert diaries, a popular series of teenage novels written in the diary form. The next year, a feature film, “Bert: The Last Virgin,” based on the series was made and Tomas received a Guldbagge nomination for Best Direction.
In the year 1999, he joined the Swedish comedy group Killinggänget as a director. His first cooperation with the group was a series of four television films released in 1999, including the mockumentary Screwed in Tallinn, which follows a group of Swedish bachelors who travel to Estonia by bus in the hopes of meeting Estonian girlfriends.
His 2004 film Four Shades of Brown is Killinggänget’s only feature film to date. The film blends four separate stories with the unifying subject of betrayal, specifically, parents betraying their children. He won four Guldbagge awards for his work on the film, including Best Direction.
International Fame
After reading John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel “Let the Right One In” he wanted to get involved in a film adaptation, and approached Lindqvist. Moreover, Tomas directed and edited the film with the collaboration of Dino Jonsäter. The movie premiered on 26 January 2008 at the Göteborg International Film Festival. Meanwhile, the director Tomas won the Festival’s Nordic Film Prize. Moreover, the film quickly became an international success and won several awards and achievements.
After the success of the movie, the director received several offers from Hollywood producers. In July 2009, he signed a deal to direct a film adaptation of John le Carré’s 1974 novel “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title Films produced the film, which premiered in September 2011 at the 68th Venice International Film Festival.
Tomas declared in 2012, that he had acquired the rights to make a film adaptation of Astrid Lindgren’s novel “The Brothers Lionheart, where he planned to direct and John Ajvide Lindqvist to write the screenplay.
This director directed the 2017 psychological thriller film “The Snowman.” However, the film was derided by critics and received a 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In 2020, he directed the Swedish comedy film “Se upp för Jönssonligan” which is the fifteenth installment in the Jonssonligan franchise, a reboot of the series.
