Early Life

On the 3rd of July 1967, Tigmanshu Dhulia came into the world in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. He is Indian by nationality and is 56 years old. Meanwhile, he has a birth sign of Cancer and he has his beliefs in Hinduism by religion. Similarly, Dhulia belongs to the Asian ethnicity.

Talking about his parents, he is the son of Keshav Chandra (father) and Sumitra Dhulia (mother). His father was a judge at the Allahabad High Court, and his mother was a professor of Sanskrit by profession.

Moreover, he has two younger brothers, one of whom later joined the Navy, while the other is a judge at the Supreme Court of India.

Education

Tigmanshu attended a local high school and completed his early schooling. Then, he went to St. Joseph’s College, Allahabad, and later, Allahabad University, where he majored in English, Economics, and Modern History.

After completing his graduation in 1986, he took a master’s degree in Theatre at the National School of Drama in New Delhi, completing the course in 1989.

Professional Career

After completing his graduation, Tigmanshu Dhulia moved to Mumbai in the year 1990, where he started working as a casting director on the TV series “Hum Log” in 1984. He then worked as an assistant director for the film “Bandit Queen” a Phoolan Devi biopic.

He was the casting director for the 1995 film “Stiff Upper Lips,” in which he also appeared as a stallholder, and the 2001 film “The Warrior,” directed by Asif Kapadia.

Dhulia began his career by assisting Pradip Krishen in the film “Electric Moon”  and Ketan Mehta in the film “Sardar” (1993). Later, he switched to television, and during the 90s Dhulia directed and produced several television programs, including the six-part “Krishna’s Dream” for UK Channel Four.

Dhulia’s 1999 series Star Bestsellers, a collection of six 45-minute short stories (“Ek Sham Ki Mulaqat”, “Fursat Main”, “Hum Saath Saath Hain Kya”, “Anekon Hitler”, “Musafir”, and “Bhawaron Ne Khilaya Phool”), established him in the entertainment industry.

He made his directorial debut with the film “Haasil” in 2003, which received critical acclaim and established him as a talented filmmaker. After this, he followed it up with films such as “Charas” (2004), “Shagird” (2011), and “Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster” (2011), which further cemented his position in the industry.

In the year 2012, he directed the biographical film “Paan Singh Tomar,” which starred Irrfan Khan in the lead role. The film was a critical and commercial success and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film.

He has also acted in several films and television shows, including “Gangs of Wasseypur” (2012) and the TV series “Criminal Justice” (2019). He has also produced films such as “Raag Desh” (2017) and “Milan Talkies” (2019).

Meanwhile, Dhulia has received several awards and nominations for his work in the Indian film industry. National Film Award for Best Feature Film (2013) for “Paan Singh Tomar”, Filmfare Award for Best Story (2013) for “Paan Singh Tomar”, Screen Award for Best Director (2013) for “Paan Singh Tomar”, Stardust Award for Best Director (2012) for “Paan Singh Tomar”, and ITA Award for Best Director – Drama (2019) for “Criminal Justice” are some of the awards he has won during his career.
