In his second season, Gibson started for the sophomore team in the 2011 NBA Rising Stars Challenge. Gibson placed second in the NBA Sixth Man of the Year voting for the 2013–2014 campaign.

In exchange for Joffrey Lauvergne, Anthony Morrow, and Cameron Payne, Gibson was moved to the Oklahoma City Thunder on February 23, 2017, along with Doug McDermott and an unprotected second-round selection in 2018.
That July, Gibson signed a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves after the season ended.
