In the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, he was selected as the first overall pick by the Boston Bruins. He scored his first goal in a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on December 3, 1997. He had three goals and seven points in 55 games as a rookie.
In the 2002-2003 season, he led the team as captain and succeeded Jason Allison, who was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. He scored 68 points in 66 games in his first season as captain.
Moreover, he was traded to the San Jose Sharks in a four-player deal in November 2005. He played a total of 92 points in 58 games with the Sharks.
He eventually agreed to a three-year contract deal with the San Jose Sharks worth $21.6 million. Similarly, he had 96 points in the 2007-08 season, with 29 goals and 67 assists.
He was named the Western Conference captain for the 2009 NHL All-Star Game, which was held in Montreal from 2008 to 2009. Moreover, he has a total of 86 points throughout the season.

International career
Joe made his first International debut on Canada’s national under-20 team for the 1997 World Junior Championships in Switzerland.
Moreover, he led the national team to the gold medal. He scored a goal and added an assist in six games in the 2001 World Championships in Germany.
But the Canadian team got eliminated in the quarter-finals by the US. He played in the 2004 World Cup and the 2005 IIHF World Championship.
He was considered the most valuable player in the competition. Despite an outstanding showing in the finals, the Czech Republic defeated Canada.
In 2006, he competed in the Winter Olympics. He scored three points, but Canada lost in the quarterfinals to Russia. He returned to the Canadian team at the 2010 Winter Games four years later. In addition, he led his team to a gold medal with the help of his teammates.
