Sanford’s stepmother committed suicide when he was 27, leaving his half-brother alone. One year later, he merged his company with a distribution company, and then with Contech, Inc., a manufacturing and research firm. He went public at $5 per share and sold it at $35 per share ten years later, in 1982.

He purchased a small $80 million bank in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1986. Moreover, he then expanded into the credit card industry. United National Corp. quickly amassed a $1 billion credit card loan portfolio through its two subsidiaries, First Premier Bank and Premier Bankcard. Meanwhile, he served as the chairman and CEO of First Premier Bank until 2000.
