Susan Wojcicki is a well-known Polish-American business executive and CEO of the world’s largest streaming platform, YouTube. In the past, Susan Wojcicki was the senior vice president in charge of marketing at YouTube’s parent company, Google Inc.

Following her parents, she is the daughter of Esther Wojcicki (father) and Stanley Wojcicki (mother). Professionally, her father is an American Polish physics professor at Stanford University while her mother works as an educator.

She grew up with her two sisters whose names are Janet and Anne. Her sister Janet is a  Ph.D. degree in anthropology and epidemiology while her other sister Anne is known as a founder of 23andMe.

Education

Regarding her academic career, she studied at the n High School Palo Alto, California, where she was regularly engaged in writing for the school newspaper. Later, she enrolled at Harvard University in 1986 and completed her graduation in 1990 with a major in literature and history.
At first, she wanted to make her career in academics and hence wanted to obtain a Ph.D. in economics. But, she changed her mind after coming across technology. In the year 1993, she received a master’s degree in economics at the University of California in Santa Cruz.
In 1998, she also earned a master’s in Business Administration from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Professional Career

Working for Google

Susan Wojcicki began her professional career, working as a management consultant at R.B. Webber & Company and Bain & Company. Moreover, she did work for Intel in the marketing division at the company’s headquarters, located in Santa Clara, California.

In September of 1998, she rented her garage in Menlo Park, California to her friends, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, to establish their office. Before becoming Google’s first marketing manager in 1999, she worked in marketing at Intel Corporation in Santa Clara, California, and was a management consultant at Bain & Company and R.B. Webber & Company.

She worked on the initial viral marketing programs, helped create the company’s longtime logo with designer Ruth Kedar, and spearheaded the first Google Doodles at Google. With the help of engineer Huican Zhu, she co-developed and launched Google Image Search.

She was the first product manager of one of Google’s seminal advertising products—AdSense in the year 2003. Afterward, she was promoted to Google’s senior vice president of Advertising & Commerce and oversaw the company’s advertising and analytic products, including AdWords, AdSense, DoubleClick, and Google Analytics.

Afterward, she supervised the Google video services. In February 2005, a video-sharing website ‘YouTube” was developed by Chad Hurley, Jawed Karim, and Steve Chen, and began competing against Google’s video service.

Moreover, Wojcicki initiated the proposal of acquiring YouTube and managed the $1.65 billion purchase of YouTube in November 2006. Similarly, she handled yet another large acquisition of Google as the company bought “DoubleClick”  in 2007 for $3.1 billion.

CEO of YouTube

In February 2014, she was promoted and took charge as the CEO of YouTube. After being the CEO of YouTube, the percentage of female employees has increased from 24 to around 30 percent in the company.

After that, she supervised the launch of different YouTube applications that targeted users who were interested in content about music, gaming, and family.

Later, YouTube released YouTube Red, a paid streaming subscription service of YouTube and YouTube TV, an over-the-top (OTT) internet TV service of the video-sharing website. As a CEO, the policy on videos was made stricter.

The company launched YouTube Shorts in 2020, its short-form video experience. In addition, YouTube publicized that the company had surpassed 50 million Music and Premium subscribers, including trailers in September 2021.

Her self-titled YouTube channel

On the 22nd of September 2013, she launched a self-titled YouTube channel. Her first video titled ‘July 2018 Creator Letter | 5 Priorities Update’ was posted on the 20th of July 2018. The video has over 1.7 million views. As of January 2023, there are over 169k subscribers.
