In August 1992, he relocated to Moscow, Russia, to work as the founding business editor of the Moscow Times, Russia’s first English-language daily newspaper.

Similarly, in 1994, Liesman joined The Wall Street Journal’s Moscow desk, and in August 1996, he was promoted to Moscow bureau chief.

In May 1998, he moved to the New York office and began covering the international oil and gas business. In June 2000, he was promoted to senior economics correspondent at the Wall Street Journal.

He concentrated on the productivity revolution, macroeconomics, and the various difficulties with corporate earnings reporting during his stint at the Wall Street Journal.

Before joining CNBC in April 2002, Liesman worked at the Wall Street Journal as a senior economics writer, covering domestic and global economies, corporate profits, and the Enron accounting disaster.
