The 32-year-old Shin Lim was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on September 25, 1991. He has two siblings, one of which is his older brother Yi. When he was a toddler, his Singapore-born parents returned to Singapore.
Lim and his family immigrated to the United States when he was 11 years old. They made their home in Acton, Massachusetts. Likewise, he is of Han Chinese descent
Lim’s interest in music started when he was nine years old. His grandmother had given him a violin at first, but he grew dissatisfied with it and broke it before switching to the piano.
Lim attended Acton-Boxborough Regional High School before enrolling in Lee University’s School of Music. He had a passion for the piano, but his professional dreams were shattered due to carpal tunnel syndrome.

Lim won World Teen Close-Up Magic in 2010, and Adult Card Magic and North American Adult Card Magic the following year. In 2012, he finished sixth in the FISM North American Card Magic Tournaments, representing North America.
Lim won I.B.M North America and FISM in 2015. In 2018, he received the Merlin Award for Best Close-Up Magic and won America’s Got Talent season 13 the same year. In 2019, he also won America’s Got Talent: The Champions.
