Talking about her career, Baszler debuted in MMA on October 31, 2003, against Tina Johnson in the South Dakota-based promotion Reality Cage Fighting. After winning that, she went on to win her next match on November 14, 2003, against Christy Zimmerman. However, in the following match, on May 15, 2004, she suffered her first defeat against Kelly Kobold.
In 2005, she competed in Jungle Madness 2 and defeated Heather Lobs. She competed in other independent promotions for the next three years, including UCS, Freestyle Combat Challenge, Ring of Fire, MFC, Bodogfight, and NFF, winning against Cindy Romero, Roxanne Modafferi, Julie Kedzie, and Samantha Anderson and losing twice to Amanda Buckner.
On July 27, 2007, she made her debut for EliteXC at a ShoXC competition, arm-barring fellow debutant for the promotion Jan Finney. She went on to defeat Jennifer Tate in the first round in 0.44 seconds and Keiko Tamai in the same round by forcing her to submit with a spectacular twister. On July 26, 2008, at the promotion’s Unfinished Business event, she was humiliated by Cris Cyborg after being promoted to the main EliteXC cards.
She competed against Sarah Kaufman on June 19, 2009, losing the contest by a unanimous decision. Later, she competed in and eventually won the Freestyle Cage Fighting Women’s Bantamweight Grand Prix at FCF 39. She subsequently defeated Adrienna Jenkins, Alexis Davis, and Megumi Yabushita.

On July 28, 2012, she competed fiercely against Sara McMann in the main match of Invicta FC 2: Baszler vs. McMann. Despite her losing effort, the match was chosen as the Fight of the Night. In her subsequent match, Baszler defeated Sarah D’Alelio, but in her third and final contest for Invicta, she was defeated by Alexis Davis.
Baszler switched to professional wrestling in 2015 and returned to Barnett’s training program. On September 26, 2015, she competed in her first professional wrestling match against Cheerleader Melissa at a Quintessential Pro Wrestling (QPG) event. Later, she competed in the promotions World Wonder Ring Stardom in Japan, Magnum Pro Wrestling, DDT Pro-Wrestling, Shimmer Women Athletes, and Absolute Intense Wrestling (AIW).
She applied for WWE sometime in late 2016, moving her career along by taking the next logical step. She participated in the WWE Mae Young Classic, winning consecutive matches over Mia Yim, Candice LeRae, and Mercedes Martinez. Playing the heel, she advanced to the finals where she was defeated by Kairi Sane.
On August 10, 2017, she made her NXT debut in a house show. On October 10, two months later, WWE announced that Baszler had signed with them and was training at the WWE Performance Center.
