Seungri is a former singer, songwriter, actor, and businessman from South Korea. Seungri rose to prominence as a member of the South Korean boy band Big Bang in the mid-2000s.
Early Life
Born as Lee Seung-hyun, better known by his stage name Seungri, was born on the 12th of December 1990, in Gwangju, South Korea. Currently, he is 32 years old and according to the astrological chart, he has a birth sign of Sagittarius.
The names of his parents are Lee Yeon-Jin and Kang Hyun-Sook. In addition, he was raised along with his younger sister, Lee Hana. From a young age, he built an interest in dancing.
Seungri – Education
In 2010, he was accepted by Chung-Ang University after he passed his entrance exams. However, he dropped out of the university in the year 2012 after being placed on academic probation several times.
Professional Career
At a young age, Seungri appeared in the reality TV show “Let’s Coke Play! Battle Shinhwa.” After appearing in this reality show, he was invited to audition for the boy band ‘Big Bang.’ He got selected for the band and also worked with fellow band members G-Dragon, T.O.P., Taeyang, and Daesung.
The band released their first studio album named “Big Bang Vol.1-Since 2007” in the year 2006. Moreover, the album also contained Seungri’s first solo song ‘The Next Day’but the album was a moderate success.
In 2007, the band released their first extended play “Always” and it also included the song ‘Lies’ which became a huge hit and topped many charts for weeks. After the success of their first EP, the band released their second EP “Hot Issue” in November 2007.
Moreover, their third EP “Stand Up” was released in August 2008. The third EP song ‘Day by Day’ became a huge hit, becoming one of the band’s most popular singles. Later, the band released their second album “Remember.”
Continued his successful career
Members of the band began branching out to pursue solo careers in 2008. In 2008, Seungri became the first member of BigBang to appear in a musical alongside Sonagi. He became the host of the MBC’s music program “Show! Music Core” alongside Daesung.
Moreover, he honed his acting career in the same year, acting in a role in the musical “Sonagi.” He made his film debut in the 2009 South Korean-Japanese film “Nineteen” where he is seen playing the main role of Park Min-seo. The same year, he appeared in the film “Why Did You Come to My House?”
He began his solo career in 2011, releasing his first solo EP “VVIP” which consists of two singles ‘VVIP’ and ‘What Can I Do.’ During this time, he played brief roles in TV shows such as “Haru” (2010) and “Lights and Shadows” (2011).
His second solo EP named “Let’s Talk About Love” was released in August 2013 and it was a huge success, topping several charts. He worked in a supporting role in the Korean medical drama “Angel Eyes” alongside labelmate Ku Hye-sun, playing the role of a Korean-American teen with the dream of becoming an emergency rescue worker.
Recent Works
Big Bang along with Seungri released their third Korean album “Made” in 2016, which reached the 172nd position on the ‘US Billboard 200.’ That same year the band released “Big Bang Made”, a documentary film which narrated the struggles of the members and their journey since the formation of the band.
In the 2016 film “High & Low: The Movie” he played the role of Lee, the son of a Korean mob boss. Additionally, he has appeared in shows such as “Popular Women 100” (2013) and “Girls Fighting” (2016). His debut Korean studio album, “The Great Seungri,” was released on July 20, 2018, with the lead songs “1, 2, 3!” and “Where R U From” as the lead singles.
He also appeared in YG and Netflix’s sitcom-variety program, YG Future Strategy Office, as a fictionalized version of himself assigned as senior counsel to the fictitious division of YG Entertainment. The show premiered in October of 2018. In November of the same year, he became a regular cast member of the variety program “We Will Channel You.”
Awards
The band Big Bang, which Seungri is also a member of, has won a number of achievements and awards. As a solo artist, he won the 2009 3rd The Musical Awards for Popularity Award category. In 2018, he won the Hallyu Star Award at the 2nd Korea China International Film Festival. That same year, he won the Scene Stealer Award at the 12th SBS Entertainment Awards.

Controversy
Seungri left BigBang and resigned from the entertainment industry on March 11, 2019, after reportedly supplying sex workers in 2015 and being charged with sexual bribery and embezzlement. After a police investigation into the Burning Sun incident, he was convicted in 2020. On September 16, 2020, Seungri’s military trial began, and he disputed 7 of his 8 counts.
On August 12, 2021, a military court found Seungri guilty of all accusations and sentenced him to three years in jail and a punishment of 1.15 billion won (US$970,000), which was reduced to 18 months on January 27, 2022, due to his admission of guilt. During the sentencing hearing, Seungri pled guilty to all charges and stated that he “will reflect on his actions.” On February 9, 2023, he was freed from jail.
