Sean Penn is a popular actor, film director, screenwriter, and producer from the United States. Sean Penn is a two-time Academy Award winner for his roles in Mystic River (2003), and Milk (2008).

Early Life

On the 17th of August 1960, Sean Penn came to the world in Santa Monica, California, the United States of America. He holds an American nationality and is 63 years old as of now. Similarly, he has a birth sign of Leo and his religion is agnosticism. Penn has mixed ethnicity.

He is the son of Leo Penn (father) and Eileen Ryan (mother). Professionally, his father was a popular actor and director, while his mother was an actress. Similarly, he has two brothers, Michael Penn (older brother) and Chris Penn (younger brother). His older brother is a musician while his younger brother was also an actor who died in 2006.

Coming towards his academic qualification, he studied at Santa Monica High School. Moreover, he later went to Santa Monica College and completed his graduation.

Professional Career

Talking about his professional career, Sean Penn made his acting debut in the 1974 drama series “Little House on the Prairie” as an extra child actor appearing in a few episodes directed by his father. In the 1981 dram film “Taps,” he made his film debut. Similarly, he was cast in the successful comedy film “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”

For his role as a troubled youth Mick O’Brien in the 1983 drama movie “Bad Boys.” With this role, he earned favorable reviews and jump-started his career as a serious actor. Later on, he played Andrew Daulton Lee in the film “The Falcon and the Snowman” (1985). The following year, this appeared in the drama film “At Close Range,” (1986),

which featured Madonna’s single, ‘Live to Tell.’ During the late 80s, his other movie appearances are “Shanghai Surprise” (1986), “Colors” (1988), “Judgement in Berlin” (1988), “Casualties of War” (1989), and “We’re No Angels” (1989). The following year, he took a break from his acting career to work as a director during the early-1990s.
After a couple of years’ acting break, he appeared in movies like “The Last Party” and “Carlito’s Way” in the year 1993. During the 90s, his movie works are “Loved” (1997), “She’s So Lovely” (1997), “U-Turn” (1997), “The Game” (1997), “Hugo Pool” (1997), “Hurlyburly” (1998), “The Thin Red Line” (1998), and “Sweet and Lowdown”(1999).

Other movies

Later, he played the role of a mentally handicapped father in the 2001 drama film “I am Sam.” And, his work in the film was appreciated by Critics. Moreover, he appeared in the crime drama film “Mystic River” (2003) and won his first Academy Award for Best Actor.
A year later, he played Samuel Bicke, a character based on Samuel Byck in the movie “The Assassination of Richard Nixon” (2004). Similarly, he was invited to be a member of the ‘Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ in the same year.
In 2006, he played the role of Governor Willie Stark in the film adaptation of the novel “All the King’s Men.” However, the film was a commercial flop and received negative reviews from critics.

For his impeccable portrayal of gay icon Harvey Milk in the 2008 biopic “Milk.” He earned another Academy Award for his role in this movie and also received praise for his work, and also won several other awards.
He starred as Joseph C. Wilson in the 2010 biographical political drama film “Fair Game.” In the year 2013, he worked in two movies “Gangster Squad”, and “The Secret Life of Walter Willy.” He also starred in the movie “The Gunman” (2015), a French-American action thriller based on the novel The Prone Gunman, by Jean-Patrick Manchette.
Later, he played the role of Dr. William Chester Minor in the biographical drama film “The Professor and the Madman” (2019). Recently, he portrayed Jack Holden, an actor based on William Holden, in the comedy-drama Licorice Pizza (2021).

As a Director

In the 1991 crime drama film “The Indian Runner” he made his directorial debut. The movie is based on Bruce Springsteen’s song “Highway Patrolman”, from the album Nebraska (1982).
Shania Twain’s “Dance with the One That Brought You” (1993), Lyle Lovett’s “North Dakota” (1993), and Peter Gabriel’s “The Barry Williams Show” (2002) are his directed music videos.
Moreover, he has directed other three films, all well-received by critics: the indie thriller The Crossing Guard (1995), the mystery film The Pledge (2001), and the biographical drama survival film Into the Wild (2007). His fifth directorial movie, The Last Face (2016) premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

Writing

Atria Books published Penn’s novel “Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff” in March 2018. Afterward, he went on a highly publicized press tour.
