Talking about his career, Salcedo, who was playing for the Paraguayan team Cerro Porteo, led all scorers in the 2005 Copa Libertadores.
After experiencing issues with his FC Tokyo coach, Alexandre Gallo, the striker then played for FC Tokyo of Japan until being loaned to Newell’s Old Boys of Argentina in the second half of 2006.
Salcedo later returned to Newell’s Old Boys for the 2007-08 season after spending the 2007 Clausura on loan with the Mexican team Chiapas. Diego Simeone asked him to join River Plate after he scored nine goals in the 2008 Clausura, including the game-winning goal against Rosario Central in the Rosario derby.
Further, Santiago returned to Newell’s for the 2009 Clausura competition after Simeone and River left after placing last in the 2008 Apertura. The Paraguayan striker was acquired by Lans on August 7, 2009, in a shared ownership agreement.
He briefly played for Argentinos Juniors before going back to Cerro Porteo. Following the 2010–11 season, Hércules envisioned Salcedo as David Trezeguet’s successor.

On August 5, 2013, Santiago agreed to join Club Atlético Banfield, a team playing in Argentina’s Primera B Nacional, on loan from Cerro Porteo.

Salcedo, who had previously spent the 2015–16 season on loan from Cerro Porteo to Sol de América, was transferred to Club Libertad on January 1, 2016, in preparation for the 2016–17 Premier Division Paraguaya season.
It was reported in January 2021 that he would continue his career at Sportivo San Lorenzo in Paraguay’s second division. His brother, Jose Domingo Salcedo, who chose to remain at Sportivo San Lorenzo to help the team be promoted back to the first tier, will serve as his coach.
Santiago’s return to the Primera División in 2022 was assured in December 2021 when the 40-year-old’s contract with recently promoted General Caballero JLM was announced.
