Rupi Kaur is a beautiful poet, writer, illustrator, author, and also an artist who hails from Hoshiarpur, Punjab, India. Rupi Kaur is popular for gaining success from her books, “Milk and Honey”, and “The Sun and Her Flowers”.

Early Life

Rupi Kaur was born on 4th October 1992, in Punjab, India. The poet n Indo- of Canadian nationality and belongs to the Punjabi South Asian Indian ethnicity. Rupi performed for the first time in the Punjabi Community Health Centre which was held in Malton in the year 2009. During high school, Kaur shared her writing with an unknown name. From the year 2013, the poet began sharing her work under her name on Tumblr. After that, Kaur started posting them on Instagram including the simple thematic illustrations from the year 2014. Her 1st book was an anthology, “Milk and Honey”. On 4th November 2014, she published the book by herself on Createspace.

The poet’s motivation for the book’s name was from an earlier poem that had a statement about women surviving dangerous times. Kaur states the women’s interchange as “smooth as milk and as thick as honey”. The book includes observations, prose, and also hand-drawn illustrations which are classified into 4 chapters, and every chapter represents a contrasting theme. After that, Kaur uploaded a series of images in March 2015 on Instagram representing herself with menstrual blood stains on her trousers and white bedsheets.

She expressed the situation as a piece of visual poetry, which created her last project for her junior studies. The same project is regarded as one of her valuable works which have an intention to challenge pervasive societal menstrual taboos. However, her posts were taken down for not following the site’s terms of service. Happily, Instagram then gave back the images, mentioning a mistaken deletion, and even apologized to her for the misunderstanding. The incident however promoted the poet to gain more followers and admirers for her work.

Finally, after that, Andrews McMeel Publishing brought out her book “Milk and Honey”. In the year 2016, the book turned out to become the eighth-best-selling fiction book in Canada. On 28th February 2021, her book was on the list of The New York Times Best Seller. The book was then translated into twenty-five other languages. In the year 2017, the poet was promoted together with an expansion in poetry sales in the United Kingdom. On 3rd October 2017, Kaur’s 2nd book, “The Sun and Her Flowers” was out.

The book was present on the list of The New York Times Best Seller on 5th January 2020 for seventy-six weeks. Her 1st book, “Milk and Honey” became the best-selling book in Canada in the year 2017 and her 2nd book, “The Sun and Her Flowers” became the seventh bestselling fiction book. However, “The Sun and Her Flowers” turned out to be the ninth bestselling book in the year 2018 in Canada, and “Milk and Honey” was in eighth place. In the year 2019, Kaur was ordered by Penguin Classics to write an introduction for the latest edition of Khalil Gibran’s “The Prophet”.

At the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, the poet went back to Brampton which is her parent’s house, and started teaching workshops on Instagram Live. On 17th November 2020, she came up with her latest poetry collection, “Home Body”. The collection even adds illustrations from the post. It became another best-selling Canadian fiction book of the week for the whole 3 weeks after it was out and even was in the top 5 in the year 2021. The book even turned on to become #1 on The New York Times Best Seller list and was still in the top place for the whole 9 weeks. Still, the book has been on the chart for 14 weeks after it was out.
