Rod Stewart is a well-known British rock and pop singer, songwriter, and record producer. Rod Stewart is known as one of the best-selling music artists of all time with a record of selling over 250 million records worldwide.

Early Life

Rod Stewart was born on the 10th of January 1945, in Highgate, London, England. It makes him 79 years old as of 2024 and is British by nationality. He has a birth sign of Capricorn and belongs to a mixed ethnicity.

Talking about his family background, he is the son of Robert Joseph Stewart (father) and Elsie Rebecca Gilbart (mother). Professionally, his father was a Scottish master builder while his mother Elsie was an English housewife.

Rod Stewart is the youngest of five children of his parent. His siblings’ names are Don Stewart, Robert Stewart, Peggy Stewart, and Mary Stewart.

At the age of 14 years old, he began learning to play the guitar even performing on hit songs of Lonnie Donegan and Chas McDevitt with his school friends forming a group, “Kool Kats.”

His father loved football and Rod’s aim was also to become a professional footballer he went for trials at Brentford F.C. but was never signed nor called back by any clubs.

Education and Early Career

Rod Stewart was the youngest and loved and cared for throughout more spoiled as he even couldn’t pass his eleven-plus exam at Highgate Primary School. Later, he went to William Grimshaw Secondary Modern School, Hornsey.

At the age of 15 years old, he dropped out of school and started doing several odd jobs to support his family, working as a silkscreen printer, newspaper delivery boy, grave digger, and fence erector.

Professional Career

Regarding his musical career, he initially started working with different bands; Hoochie Coochie Men, Steampacket, Shotgun Express, and Jimmy Powell & the Five Dimensions starting in 1961. Having worked hard for almost six years, he finally got his initial break when he joined as a vocalist in “Jeff Back Group” in 1967.
The next year the group released their first album “Truth” which gained much popularity. However, the group split in  1969 following the release of their second album, “Beck-Ola.”
After this, he began his solo career with his debut album in 1969 named “An Old Raincoat Won’t Let You Down.” Then, he joined another band named “Faces” and released their debut album “First Step” in 1970. Moreover, the band earned him much recognition and fame as they began to sell out tickets for their tours and sold-out albums.
In addition, Stewart’s solo career reached a peak with the release of his chart-topping album, “Never a Dull Moment” released in 1973.
The band Faces released their last final album, “Ooh La La”(1073), then made a world tour and disbanded in 1975.
He recorded several hit solo albums after moving to Los Angeles such as; “A Night on the Town”(1976), “Foot Loose & Fancy-Free”(1977), and “Tonight I’m Yours”(1981).  In 1988, he released the hit album “Out of Order” which included several hit singles “Lost in You”, “Forever Young”, “Crazy About Her”, and “My Heart Can’t Tell You No.” Back in 1998, he released his eightieth album “When We Were the New Boys.”

In 2002, he released “It Had to Be You: the Great American Songbook”, the first album from the songbook series.”Thanks for the Memory: The Great American Songbook 4″ his fourth songbook album was released in 2005.
He released his studio album “Soulbook” in the year 2009. He released his first Christmas album named “Merry Christmas, Baby” in 2012. “Rod: The Autobiography” his autobiography was released that same year.
In 2013, he released his 28th album “Time” which charted no. 1 on several charts.  “Another Country” his 29th album was released in 2015 alongside the single “Love Is.” On the 28th of September 2018, he released his 30th studio album, “Blood Red Roses.”
He released the album “You’re in My Heart: Rod Stewart with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra” on the 22nd of November 2019. He released his 31st studio album “The Tears of Hercules” in November 2021.

Awards

In the year 1993, Rod Stewart was awarded the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. That same year, he received a Legend Award from the World Music Awards. In the year 1994, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Later, he started dating Penny Lancaster, a photographer from 1999. With the relationship, they had a son named Alastair Wallace Stewart, in 2005 and finally got married in 2007. After the marriage, the couple had two sons including the later-born Aiden Patrick Stewart, in 2011.

Back in 2000, Rod was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and underwent surgery the same month. In the past, he suffered from a benign vocal cord nodule. Moreover, he was again diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017.
