Talking about the beginning of his company, Goya Foods, the founder is Prudencio Unanue Ortiz. The family business was initially called “Unuaue & Sons”. However, the founder changed its name to Goya Foods in the year 1961. The founder is Robert’s grandfather, who lived from 1886 to 1976.
Before Robert assumed the position of CEO of Goya Foods, his uncle – Joseph Andrew Unanue served as president as well as CEO of Goya Foods. Joseph was in the office from 1976 until Robert’s appointment in 2004. Robert became the CEO 43 years after he started working for the family business as a young child.
His other uncle – Francisco Unanue – founded “Goya de Puerto Rico” in the 1960s. Subsequently, Francisco became the president of the Puerto Rican division. Francisco then handed over his position as President of Goya de Puerto Rico to Carlos Unanue in the year 2013.

Robert Unanue visited the White House in July 2020. There, the Goya Foods CEO guaranteed one million cans of Goya chickpeas to food banks. Moreover, the billionaire shared that Americans are truly blessed to have Donald Trump as a leader. Robert’s comment regarding Donald Trump sparked negative reactions. People also called for a boycott of Goya Foods. However, this also sparked counter-boycotts in support of Goya Foods.
Soon, on 20 January 2021, Robert claimed that the Democratic party, media, and technology elites used the novel coronavirus to control the American public and steal the 2020 US presidential election. Robert claimed this on Fox Business.

Subsequently, on 25 January 2021, Goya Foods’ board of directors censured Robert after he made unfounded public claims. His claims were about voter fraud during and after the 2020 presidential election. Without the board’s permission, Robert isn’t allowed to speak to the press regarding the politics of the company.
Moreover, the majority of the Goya Foods’ board wanted to remove Robert from his position as CEO. However, as it was a family-owned business, the company’s regulations didn’t allow for that.
