He played for the Harry Redknapp-coached Third Division squad that defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the 1983–84 FA Cup. Savage briefly played for Bradford City before transferring to Bolton Wanderers in September 1987 for a fee of £30,000.

On May 7, 1988, he beat his previous team Wrexham to secure Bolton’s promotion from the Fourth Division by scoring the game-winning goal. He took part in the 1989 Football League Trophy championship game at Wembley.
Savage played his last professional match on April 7, 1990, against Preston North End. During the game, he broke his leg, and as a result of the accident, he had to retire.
