Robert J. Smith formed his first band when he was 14, including his brother Richard, younger sister Janet and friends. The band’s name was Crawley Goat Band. Their middle school band, The Obelisk, later became the rock band The Cure. The band members were Robert Smith on piano, Michael Dempsey on guitar, Laurence Tolhurst on percussion., Alan Hill on bass guitar, and Marc Ceccagno on lead guitar. The members called themselves malice.

Likewise, the band rehearsed Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, and Alex Harvey songs in the local church hall. By April 1976, three members had left. The band changed its name to Easy Cure and new members Martin Creasy (vocals), Tolhurst (drums), and Pearl Thompson (guitar) joined the band. Next year in January 1977, Martin Creasy left. In 1978, it renamed the band, The Cure.

In 1979, they released their debut album Three Imaginary Boys, along with other singles like Killing an Arab, and 10:15 Saturday Night. Smith and Steve Severin of Siouxsie and the Banshees went on a UK tour to promote their second album Join Hands. In 1980, Michael Dempsey left and Matthieu Hartly (keyboard) and Simon Gallup (bass) joined the band.

Likewise, they released their third album Faith and Seventeen Seconds with their single Forest which became a hit. Robert had to shoulder the entire recording process of the band from July 1982 to February 1985. Their fourth album was Pornography which was released in 1982. In 1984, he released a solo album The top. Robert played all the instruments except the drums.

Similarly, in 1989 the band released the album Disintegration which was featured at No.3 in the UK music countdown and No.12 in the US music countdown with three of its songs featuring in the Top 30 list in the UK and Germany. Moreover, in 1991 the band won their first Brit Award. Their ninth album Wish which was released in 1992 became a hit peaking at the No.1 position on all top UK music charts and No.2 on US music charts.

From 2000 to 2008, he recorded new albums with The cure, which are Bloodflowers, The Cure, and 4:13 Dream. Robert is the only member who is a continuous member of The Cure. He became a lead singer as the original singer left the band. Moreover, in 2005, Robert won Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement in recognition of his songwriting and composition skills.

Later, from 2010 to 2012, he performed solo and collaborated with other artists working on solo covers like Frank Sinatra’s Witchcraft and Very Good Advice from Alice in Wonderland.
