Ricky Martin was born on the 24th of December 1971, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As of 2024, he is 52 years old and holds Puerto Rican nationality. He has a birth sign of Capricorn and belongs to the Hispanic ethnicity. His birth name is Enrique Martín Morales and follows Christianity by religion.

He is the son of Enrique Martin Negroni (father) and Dona Nereida Morales (mother). Professionally, his father is a former psychologist and former regional supervisor for a Puerto Rican mental health agency.

While his mother is a former accountant. When he was just two years old, his parents divorced, and grew up with his half-siblings, whose names are Fernando, Angel Fernandez, Eric, Daniel, and Vanessa.

Talking about his academic career, he attended Colegio Sagrado Corazon. Later, he enrolled in New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1990. However, he dropped out before the start of classes to travel to Mexico City to perform in the play.

Ricky Martin began singing at the age of six. He made microphones out of wooden kitchen spoons. Later, he began appearing in television commercials when he was just nine years old.

Moreover, he subsequently began his musical career as a member of Menudo, a Puerto Rican boy band. After a series of tryouts, he was accepted into the band at the age of 12.

He made his band debut at San Juan’s Luis A. Ferre Performing Arts Center. He became an important member of the group and a fan favorite. The band recorded 11 albums during his tenure with them. “Hold Me” the band’s successful single was their first and only entry on the US Billboard Hot 100 list.

Solo Career

In 1985, he also appeared in the American romantic comedy/drama television series The Love Boat. He appeared in the Argentine soap opera Por Siempre Amigos in 1987.  Despite the band’s success, he was exhausted by the band’s heavy workload and strict management.

He quit the band in 1989 to face the pressures he was subject to and returned to Puerto Rico. Later, he also graduated from high school. He was supposed to attend New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, but he dropped out before school started when his friends invited him to Mexico City to appear in the musical comedy play Mama Ama el Rock.

In 1990, he also appeared in the Mexican telenovela Alcanzar Una Estrella.  A Sony Discos executive recognized his acting roles and gave him his first solo music recording agreement.

Ricky, his debut solo album, was released in 1991. The album reached number five on the Billboard Latin Pop Albums list in the United States and sold over 500,000 copies worldwide.

It includes hit singles such as “Fuego Contra Fuego,” “El Amor de Mi Vida.” and “Dime Que Me Quires.” He later went on to release popular albums, including Me Amaaras (1993), A Medio Vivir (1995), Vuelve (1998), Ricky Martin (1999), Sound Loaded (2000), Almas del Silencio (2003), Life (2005), Musica + Alma + Sexo (2011), A Quien Quiera Escuchar (2015), and Pausa + Play (2022).

His breakthrough came in 1995, with the release of his third studio album, A Medio Vivir. It sold over three million copies worldwide and received gold certification in the United States, platinum certification in France, four times platinum certification in Spain, and several additional certifications in Latin American nations.

His major singles from the album were “Te Extrano, Te Olvido, Te Amo” “Maria” and “Volveras” “Maria” his breakthrough single, became his first international success.

Other albums and Acting career

Ricky, his first English-language album, was released in 1999. The album broke multiple records, and the debut song, “Livin’ la Vida Loca” went on to become one of the best-selling singles of all time.

In 2006, Martin released his first live album, MTV Unplugged. He recorded his MTV Unplugged set in Miami, where he sang romantic ballads and up-tempo tropical dance hits, as well as three new songs.

The album, which was released in August, debuted at the top of the Top Latin Albums list. In 2013, he released Greatest Hits: Souvenir Edition, a compilation album. In addition, Martin began his acting career with two seasons of the American sitcom, Getting By.

His role in the famous soap opera General Hospital pushed him to popularity, and he became “one of the most talked about actors on the soap opera.” In the drama Les Miserables, he portrayed Marius Pontmercy.

From March 2012 to January 2013, he played Che in the Broadway production of the musical Evita, where he set seven box-office records. In the FX true crime anthology series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, he played fashion designer Gianni Versace’s collaborator Antonio D’Amico.

In 2008, he became the father of twin sons, Matteo and Valentino, who were born via the utilization of a gestational surrogate. In 2011, Martin disclosed his relationship with economist Carlos Gonzalez Abella. However, they separated in 2014.
