Welter was a member of the team until 1995 when he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. He signed a two-year contract with the Miami Heat in 1998. His overall record as a coach at the University of San Francisco was 126-125 when he retired in 2016. They appointed Grand Rapids Drive as their new head coach.
He was hired by the Detroit Pistons as an assistant coach in 2017. Since then, He has relocated and worked as an assistant coach for many organizations. Rex is employed by the New Orleans Pelicans as an assistant coach as of the year 2022.
