Rex declared for the 1993 NBA draft. The New Jersey Nets selected him with the 16th overall pick in the first round.

Welter was a member of the team until 1995 when he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. He signed a two-year contract with the Miami Heat in 1998. Moreover, Walter moved to Europe to play in the European League and the Spanish Basketball League in 2000. The University of Valparaiso offered him a position as an assistant coach in 2003.

His overall record as a coach at the University of San Francisco was 126-125 when he retired in 2016. They appointed Grand Rapids Drive as their new head coach.

He was hired by the Detroit Pistons as an assistant coach in 2017. Since then, He has relocated and worked as an assistant coach for many organizations. Rex is employed by the New Orleans Pelicans as an assistant coach as of the year 2022.

Walters got First-team All-Big Eight twice while playing, in 1992 and 1993. He was also named WCC Coach of the Year in 2014.
