He was the individual champion in the years 1967, 1973, and 1985, at the European Championships. He even was able to ride on seven winning West German teams in the years 1965, 1973, 1983, 1985, and others as well.

Furthermore, He was able to compete in eventing early in his career. He also was a member of the winning West German three-day event team at the 1959 European Championships and was able to finish 18th in individual eventing at the 1960 Summer Olympics. This event made him the best German combination and he even won a Grand Prix show jumping competition in Berlin. Moreover, Reiner Klimke not only rode and trained but also ran a law firm as well as served on several boards, including the FEI Dressage Committee.
