Radoslav Nesterovic is a renowned former Slovenian-Greek-Serbian professional basketball player. Radoslav Nesterovic played for NBA teams such as Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, Indiana Pacers, and Toronto Raptors during his playing career.

Early Life

Radoslav Nesterovic opened his eyes to the world on 20 May 1976, in Ljubljana, SR Slovenia, SFR Yugoslavia. Currently, he is 47 years old and has a zodiac sign of Gemini. He holds three citizenships of Slovenian-Serbian-Greek and belongs to Slovenian ethnicity. Moreover, he can speak multiple languages such as Serbian, Slovenian, Italian, Greek, and English. His full name is Radoslav “Rasho” Nesterović.

He was born to his father Cedo and his mother Branka. By profession, his father was a Bosnian Seerb employee at the Slovenian Railways and his mother was a midwife at the Ljubljana University Medical Centre. He was raised along with his sister whose name is yet unknown in public.

Professional Career

Radoslav Nesterovic began playing basketball with the KD Slovan youth team then played for the Partizan Belgrade junior club in the 1992-1993 season. He relocated to PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece due to the Yugoslav wars.

To avoid EU regulations, he obtained citizenship in Greece while playing there. Because of the restrictions of Greek law, he used the name Radoslav Makris in Greece to gain his Greek citizenship. He returned to his birthplace for the Union Olympija’s 1995-1996 season.

In the Slovenian domestic league, he averaged 17 points and 14 rebounds per game while playing 30 minutes each game. While playing for the Slovenian youth national team, he was named Most Valuable Player in the 1996 FIBA Europe U-20 Championship.

During the 1996-1997 Euroleague season, he averaged 14 points and 8 rebounds per game and was a member of the great Olimpija squad that reached the Final Four in Rome. Then, he transferred to the Italian League and played for Virtus Bologna as a result of his Euroleague experience.

NBA Career

In the 1998 NBA draft, Nesterović was a first-round draft pick (17th overall) of the Minnesota Timberwolves. In his seven years with the Minnesota Timberwolves, he made a respectable and solid impact with his rebounding abilities and presence in the paint.

He joined the San Antonio Spurs for the 2003-2004 season and stayed with them for three seasons. He has a good scoring average and a significant rebounding output.

Moreover, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Matt Bonner, Eric Williams, and a second-round draft selection in 2009. With the Raptors, he averaged 6 points and 5 rebounds per game.

On July 9, 2008, he was moved to the Indiana Pacers together with T.J. Ford, Maceo Baston, and the 17th selection in the draft, Roy Hibbert, for Jermain O’neal and 41st pick Nathan Jawai from the Toronto Raptors.

Return to Europe: Olympiacos and Post Career

On July 30, 2009, he returned to the Toronto Raptors. In the 2010-11 season, he was recruited by Olympiacos Piraeus to return to Europe for two years. Moreover, he was released by Olympiacos in July 2011. As a result, he retired from a basketball career. From November 3, 2014, until July 11, 2023, he served as Secretary-General of the Basketball Federation of Slovenia. He was elected to the FIBA commission of players in 2015.

Played for the national team

He served as a captain of Slovenia’s senior men’s national basketball team until his retirement in 2008. Moreover, he helped his country finish sixth in the EuroBasket 2005 in Belgrade, earning a spot in the 2006 FIBA World Championship. He averaged 21.7 minutes per game, 6 points per game, and 6.2 rebounds per game at EuroBasket 2005.
