Early Life

Paul Van Dyk was born on December 16, 1971, in Eisenhüttenstadt, East Germany. His age is currently 52 years old. However, there is no information about his parents and siblings. According to some online sources, he was raised in East Berlin by his mother only.

Early Life and Career

Paul van Dyk was raised in an only-parent home in East Berlin after his father left his mother and him when he was four years old. He worked as a broadcast technician there while living there, and he also started his carpenter training. Paul believes that radio was the source of his musical training.

Additionally, Van Dyk and his mother were permitted to leave East Germany shortly before the Berlin Wall fell, and they moved to Hamburg to live with his aunt. Van Dyk returned to Berlin in 1990. In March 1991, he made his debut as a DJ at the club Tresor.

He was allowed to perform at Andre’Hoche’s (1991–1993) Dubmission nights in the Turbine Club after several further dates, with the young resident DJ Kid Paul. He worked as The Visions of Shiva with Cosmic Baby.

The Berlin-based indie label MFS (Masterminded For Success) Records, which is operated by English-speaking producer Mark Reeder and manager Torsten Jurk, released their song “Perfect Day.”

Van Dyk and Kid Paul performed for a large audience on German radio in February 1993 while hosting an episode of the weekly three-hour “HR3 Clubnight” radio show.

Van Dyk and Cosmic called it quits musically after the release of the second and last Visions of Shiva song, “How Much Can You Take?” Paul remixed Humate’s dance hymn “Love Stimulation” at the end of the summer and released his first DJ-mix compilation, “X-Mix-1 – the MFS Trip.”

1994-2007

Van Dyk released Pump This Party, Emergency 911, and The Green Valley EP in 1994. In the meantime, MFS gathered a lot of remixes for Paul. Van Dyk had the chance to mix the song “Spooky” off the Republic album because of MFS label owner Mark Reeder’s good friendship with musicians like New Order. Along with Johnny Klimek and VOOV, he cut his first 45 RPM Album.

Van Dyk’s first significant breakthrough in Britain came with Seven Ways, which established him as a meditation pioneer.  The top album, as chosen by DJ Magazine readers, is Seven Ways. Early in 1997, van Dyk started working with American music producer BT.

They collaborated to create songs like “Flaming June,” “Forbidden Fruit,” and “Namistai.” Van Dyk said, “By the time they realized I was German, it was too late!”

Moreover, Van Dyk quit MFS Records in the middle of 1998 and gained a majority interest in the young Vandit Records. Van Dyk demonstrated his ability in 2000 with the melodious, dancefloor-friendly Out There and Back, which featured the top-charting single “Tell Me Why (The Riddle),” a Saint Etienne collaboration.

A remix of Jennifer Brown’s song Alive, We Are Alive, became a blockbuster in Europe. Global (2003), a globe tour, his debut mix CD The Politics of Dancing (2001), and the Mexican movie Zurdo, for which van Dyk wrote the score and received a Mexican Academy Award, were his next steps.

The same song was also featured on the FIFA 2004 game’s soundtrack. The single “The Other Side,” which featured Wayne Jackson and was released before the mix album The Politics of Dancing 2 (2005), was written in honor of the people who suffered and died in the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake and resulting tsunami that struck Thailand on December 26, 2004, as well as their families.

2007-2010

On August 14, 2007, Van Dyk made his fifth studio album, In Between, available globally. His three-year project, the album, debuted at No. 115 on the Billboard 200, No. 2 on the Top Electronic Albums chart, and No. 1 on the Top Heatseekers chart.

On the Mexican Albums Chart, the album peaked at No. 16, while on the Mexican International Chart, it peaked at No. 5. An eight-track bonus CD, an eight-page picture anthology, and a mixed version of the entire album were included in a special edition of the album that was issued alongside it and limited to 2,000 copies.

The album was mostly produced by Paul van Dyk, with collaboration from a variety of other producers, including Talking Heads’ David Byrne, the Pussycat Dolls’ Jessica Sutta, Luminary’s Ashley Tomberlin, Alex M.O.R.P.H., Lo-Fi Sugar, Rea Garvey of Reamonn, Ryan Merchant, and Wayne Jackson.

Moreover, the song “Another Sunday” includes a vocal sample from Ben Lost from Probspot’s “Blows My Mind.” Van Dyk began his global “In Between Tour” in June 2007 to promote the record. Van Dyk invited prospective producers to remix his tune “Far Away,” which was featured on his album In Between, in May 2008 through the digital distribution network Beatport.

At the Berlin Wall 20th Anniversary Tribute on November 9, 2009, van Dyk played alongside Northern Ireland singer Johnny McDaid. They made a recording of the song “We Are One” and performed it for the occasion.

2012-Present

On April 3, 2012, Van Dyk’s sixth studio album, Evolution, was made available. Along with Adam Young of Owl City, the song “Eternity” was created. Producers like Giuseppe Ottaviani, Austin Leeds, Arty, and Ummet Ozcan are also present in Evolution. Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid, Plumb, Sarah Howells, and other musicians are included on the album as vocalists.

Van Dyk fell over a stage gap on February 28, 2016, while performing at the A State of Trance Festival in Utrecht. He was taken to a nearby hospital. Van Dyk spent weeks under medical monitoring at Utrecht Medical Center due to severe brain damage and spine injury.

Up to the middle of May 2016, he was authorized for a professional medical transfer to a facility in Berlin. During this time, other shows were forced to be canceled, including the Electric Daisy Carnival Mexico.

The recording of Van Dyk’s eighth studio album was significantly delayed as a result of his injury. Van Dyk was able to finish the album in the early summer of 2017 after continuing his recovery. On October 20 of the same year, his own Vandit label published From Then On.

Van Dyk then drew inspiration from his experiences from the year before, which was most evident in the titles of the songs. The media gave it favorable reviews, with Billboard describing it as “a celebration of a great life.” and EDMSauce’s website calling it “near faultless.”

The album’s musical direction mostly followed that of “The Politics of Dancing 3,” and collaborations with, among others, Alex M.O.R.P.H., M.I.K.E. Push, and Jordan Suckley were featured.
