P.J. Soles is a promising American TV and movie actress. P.J. Soles is known for playing roles as Norma Watson in the movie “Carrie” (1976) and Lynda van der Klok in the movie “Halloween” (1978).

Early Life

Pamela Jayne Soles, shortly known as P.J. Soles was born in Frankfurt, West Germany, on the 17th of July 1950. She has a sun sign of Cancer and is 73 years old as of 2024. She belongs to a mixed ethnicity of Dutch-American descent and practices Christianity. Additionally, she holds American nationality.

She was born to her parents; Cornelis Johannes Hardon II (father) and Ancy Handron (mother). Her mother was an American while her father was a Dutch who used to work at an international insurance company.

She studied at the International School of Brussels in Brussels, Belgium. Later, she enrolled at Briarcliff College in White Plains, New York, and later transferred to Georgetown University.

Professional Career

When P.J. Soles joined Georgetown University, she aspirations to become the first women ambassador to the Soviet Union. However, her career goal changed when she visited the Actors Studio in New York City, and Soles was inspired to pursue acting.

Started acting journey

She relocated to Manhattan and began modeling for fashion magazines and starring in commercials. In 1974, she was cast as a shampoo model in filmmaker Perry Henzell’s film “No Place Like Home.” It would have been her debut film role, but Henzell was unable to finish it until 2006. In 1975, she moved to Los Angeles and made her film debut with the film “Blood Bath.”

Meanwhile, she auditioned for two films “Carrie” (1976), and “Star Wars” (1977) competing against hundreds of actors. She auditioned for the part of Princess Leia in “Star Wars,” but the role finally went to Carrie Fisher.

However, she was cast as Norma Watson in Brian De Palma’s “Carrie.” She co-starred with Sissy Spacek, Nancy Allen, John Travolta, Amy Irving, and Piper Laurie.

Originally, her character was only meant to have one line, but De Palma liked her performance so much that he enlarged her part, making her the secondary antagonist to Allen’s Chris Hargensen. Soles got hurt on the location while filming when a fire hose burst during the prom scene damaging her eardrum.

Other movies roles

In 1976, she reunited with Carrie co-star John Travolta in Randal Kleiser’s television film “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble.” She was then cast in the 1978 independent slasher film “Halloween” playing the role of Lynda Van Der Klok and directed by John Carpenter. The same year, she appeared in the film “Our Winning Season” playing the role of Cindy Hawkins.

In 1979, she appeared in the musical comedy film “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School” playing the role of Riff Randell with The Ramones. On the film’s soundtrack, she receives a singing credit for a second version of the title song. She reprised her role as Riff Randell in the artwork for the Local H album “Whatever Happened to P.J. Soles?”

She played the Private Wanda Winter in the 1980’s comedy film “Private Benjamin.” The next year, she was cast as an MP who becomes Bill Murray’s girlfriend, Stella Hansen, in the comedy film “Stripes.”

Continued appearing in successful films

Soles co-starred with Jessica Lange as Wanda in Karel Reisz’s biographical film “Sweet Dreams” in 1985. She was cast in the dark comedy film “Jawbreaker” in 1999. The actress played Riff Randell from Rock ‘n’ Roll High School in The Donnas’ music video for “Too Bad About Your Girl” (2003).

In the Rob Zombie 2005 film “The Devil’s Rejects”, Soles plays Susan, the victim of a violent family. She appeared in “The Butterfly Room” in 2012, opposite Barbara Steele, Heather Langenkamp, Camille Keaton, and Adrienne King.

In 2018, she appeared as a teacher in the direct sequel “Halloween,” directed by David Gordon Green. The next year, she played the role of Marcy Taylor  in the horror film “Candy Corn.”

Television

Soles has also appeared in several television series. “Love is a Many Splendored Thing” (1973) was her television debut. Following her appearance in that TV series, she portrayed Minnesota in “The Blue Knight.”

In 1997, she appeared in more than three television series. Later, in 1978, she portrayed Nancy in “Zuma Beach” and Cassie in “Romance Theatre” (1982). Similarly, in 1994, she played Evelyn Randall in “Rebel Highway.”
