Early Life and Education
Oriini Kaipara was born in 1983, in her birthplace, Whakatāne, New Zealand. Her age might be 40 or 41. However, there is no information about her family and other relatives. While working as a reporter for TVNZ’s Te Karere in January 2019, she got a moko kauae facial tattoo. She was the first person with a moko kauae to deliver mainstream television news on TVNZ’s One News in November 2019. She switched to Three in May 2021 and started delivering the news on Newshub Live at 4.30 p.m.
As of February 2022, Kaipara and Simon Shepherd co-host the weekly political news program Newshub Nation on Three. She is respected as a host for her conversational fluency in both Mori and English, her opinions on Mori-relevant political matters, and her dedication to the preservation of both te reo Mori and tikanga Mori.
Recognition
Kaipara won the Mori Media Awards’ Best Female Television Presenter prize in 2008. Kaipara’s work on Native Affairs for Mori Television earned her the Voyager Award for Best Mori Affairs Reporter in 2018. For being the first person to broadcast a primetime news program on national television with traditional facial marks in 2021, Kaipara garnered popularity on a global scale.
