On December 7, 1928, Avram Noam Chomsky was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. He was born to his parents William Chomsky and Elsie Simonofsky. Additionally, his father was a scholar of Hebrew and his mother was a teacher. He also has a sibling named David.

Education

Talking about his education, he attended Central High School. Later, in 1945, he went to the University of Pennsylvania. In 1955, he received a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Noam Chomsky was in a relationship with his childhood love Carol Dioris Schatz, in 1947. In 1949, the couple got married and were blessed with 3 children.

Professional life

At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1955, Noam Chomsky was appointed as an assistant professor. Within two years he was promoted to the position of associate professor, due to his work.
From 1957-58, he also served as a visiting professor at Columbia University. Later, he published his first book ‘Syntactic Structures’ based on a series of lectures he gave to his students at MIT, in 1957.

In the year 1961, he was made a full professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics. He had established himself as a renowned linguist, by the time. Thus, he was appointed as a plenary speaker at the Ninth International Congress of Linguists, held in 1962. Along with his teaching career, Besides, he continued to publish several influential works such as ‘Aspects of the Theory of Syntax’ (1966).
In the same year, he worked on ‘Topics in the Theory of Generative Grammar’ and ‘Cartesian Linguistics: A Chapter in the History of Rationalist Thought. Additionally, he started getting more involved in political activism, in the late 1960s.
In the year 1967, he publicly started speaking against the United States’ foreign policy. In The New York Review of Books, his essay titled ‘The Responsibility of Intellectuals’, was published in February 1967. Whereas, he published his first political book ‘American Power and the New Mandarins’, in 1969.

More about her career

He wrote several books like At War with Asia’, ‘The Backroom Boys’, ‘For Reasons of State’, and ‘Peace in the Middle East?’. With Mitchell Goodman, Denise Levertov, William Sloane Coffin, and Dwight Macdonald, he founded the anti-war collective RESIST. Hence, he was also arrested numerous times, but nothing could deter his rebellious spirit.  Noam Chomsky traveled to Hanoi in 1970 to give a lecture at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
On this trip, he also visited the refugee camps in Laos. Likewise, he gave the Bertrand Russell Memorial Lectures at the University of Cambridge, the following year. In 1971, his lectures were collected and published as ‘Problems of Knowledge and Freedom’. Moving on, he also published Studies on Semantics in Generative Grammar’, an enlarged edition of ‘Language and Mind’, and ‘Reflections on Language’.

In collaboration with Edward S. Herman, he wrote the book ‘Counter-Revolutionary Violence – Bloodbaths in Fact & Propaganda’.Therefore, he signed a petition in support of the free-speech rights of Robert Faurisson, in 1979.
Thus, it is a French lecturer whose views contradicted the accepted history of the Holocaust. His public support for Faurisson earned him much criticism, even though he condemned the Nazis? In 1985, he traveled to Managua during Nicaragua’s Contra War in 1985.
Later, he gave public lectures on politics and linguistics to the workers’ organizations and refugees. Soon in 1987, it was published as ‘On Power and Ideology: The Managua Lectures’. He and Herman co-authored ‘Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media’, in 1988. Later on, in 1992, the book was adapted into a film ‘Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media’.
In 1995, he visited Australia to discuss this issue at the request of the East Timorese Relief Association and the National Council for East Timorese Resistance. Moreover, his lectures were received and were published as ‘Powers and Prospects’ in 1996. In 1999, East Timor’s independence from Indonesia was finally achieved. And. his efforts are believed to have greatly aided the cause.
