Nick Buoniconti

Nick Buoniconti was an American professional football player. Nick Buoniconti played for the National Football League (NFL) and American Football League (AFL) and was a middle linebacker.

Early Life

Nick Buoniconti was born on December 15, 1940. He grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. He was of American nationality and his birth sign was Sagittarius. His parents were Nicholas Anthony Buoniconti Sr. and Pasqualina “Patsy” Mercolino. Further, his full birth name is Nicholas Anthony Buoniconti.

He played football for Cathedral High School. Later, from Notre Dame, he graduated, and in the 13th round of the 1962 AFL draft, he was drafted by the American Football League’s Patriots.

Nick Buoniconti – Health Issues and Death

Nick shared that he struggled with neurological issues. Therefore, with one or many different diagnoses potentially being the cause. Moreover, he disclosed on November 3, 2017, that he would posthumously donate his brain to aid CTE research. Further, he joined former NFL stars Harry Carson and Phil Villapiano to support a parent initiative called Flag Football Under 14 in March 2018, which advises no tackle football under that age.

Sadly, at the age of 78, on July 30, 2019, he passed away. Therefore, he died of pneumonia in Bridgehampton, New York.

Talking about his professional career, Nick was the captain of the 1961 Notre Dame football team. In 1663, he helped Boston capture the 1963 AFL Eastern Division title. Likewise, in 1963, he was named 2nd team All-AFL and the following season started a run of five consensus All-AFL seasons. Moreover, Nick is a member of the Patriots All-1960s Team and the AFL All-Time Team.

In 1969, he was traded to the AFL’s Miami Dolphins. Likewise, he continued to play well with the Dolphins, in 1969–1974, and 1976 and made the AFL All-Star team in 1969 and the NFL Pro Bowl in 1972 and 1973. Also, in 1972, he was named All-AFC. Further, he was named to the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl in the years 1972 and 1973.

Further, Nick ended his career with the Dolphins, with an unofficial 24 sacks, 18 with the Patriots, and 6. Moreover, his 32 career interceptions rank him 3rd all-time among NFL linebackers. Moreover, this player was named the Dolphins’ Most Valuable Player 3 times. Likewise, he was voted as a linebacker on the Dolphins’ Silver Anniversary All-Time team in the year 1990.

Likewise, he was enshrined on the Miami Dolphin’s Honor Roll at Hard Rock Stadium on November 18, 1991. During his years with the Patriots, this player gained a J.D. degree from Suffolk University Law School. Therefore, he was a practicing attorney for a short time.
