Nicholas Baptiste is a Canadian Professional Ice Hockey Player. Nicholas Baptiste is the forward player who is currently playing for Tappara in the Liiga. The Buffalo Sabres drafted him in the third round (69th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Career and Professional Life

Nicholas Baptiste started ice skating when he was 6 years old and was able to join his first hockey team the following year. And, he received his start in a house league when he was 8 years old. Then, quickly transitioned to competitive hockey.

He was able to catch the attention of scouts and agents at such a young age. Winning the Player of the Year Award in the year 2011 is one of the huge accomplishments for him. Also, representing the Under-16 Ontario team at the Canada Winter Games is a testament to his talent. But, he suffered a season-ending injury, but his performance in the OEMHL with 55 points in 24 games was outstanding.

Baptiste had a great start to his career when the Sudbury Wolves drafted him in the first round of the OHL Entry Draft. In his first season, he was able to play in 68 games and had 8 goals and 19 assists. He even got the opportunity to represent Canada Ontario and was able to win a bronze medal in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge.

Then, in his second season, he went on to become one of the top scorers for the Wolves with 21 goals and 27 assists. He also helped Team Canada win a gold medal in the IIHF World U18 Championships. When his talent and success caught the attention of the NHL, he was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres.

Likewise, he went on to have a leadership role as an assistant captain for the Sudbury Wolves in his third season in the OHL. And, had an incredible season, leading the team in scoring with 45 goals and 44 assists in 65 games. His performance helped him earn recognition as the Eastern Conference’s Best Shootout Skater in the OHL Coaches Poll. He then went on to sign a three-year entry-level contract with the Buffalo Sabres. And, in his fourth season, he was able to become co-captain for the Wolves before being traded to the Erie Otters.

Nicholas Baptiste was able to join the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League (AHL) for their 2015–16 season upon concluding his major junior career. Then, after an impressive performance in the Prospects Challenge, he was able to catch the attention of the Sabres’ coach, Dan Bylsma.

Unfortunately, he suffered a back injury during a preseason game and couldn’t finish the training camp. However, he was medically cleared to play for the Americans’ opening night game. But, due to injuries on the Sabres’ roster, he received his first NHL call-up and made his debut against the Calgary Flames. He even went on to score his first career NHL goal in the following game, although it was awarded due to a misplay by the Canucks. In the year 2018, he re-signed with the Sabres.

Moreover, after being traded to the Nashville Predators in October 2018, Nicholas went on to join their AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals. However, he was traded again in February 2019, this time to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for future considerations. He was able to join the Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, and finish the season with 2 goals and 7 points in 18 games.

More About Professional Career

After his contract with the Maple Leafs ended, Baptiste went on to sign a one-year AHL contract with the Marlies in August 2019. And, in the 2019-20 season, he was able to score 3 goals in 29 games with the Marlies before being traded to the Belleville Senators in exchange for Miles Gendron in February 2020.

Furthermore, after his time with the Texas Stars, he was able to sign a one-year AHL contract with the Texas Stars on January 23, 2021. He had a successful season, scoring 12 goals and tallying 24 points in 34 regular season games. Then, he decided to take his talents abroad and signed a one-year deal with Ilves Tampere in Finland’s Liiga.

After his time in Finland, he went on to join Kölner Haie in the German DEL for the 2022-23 season. There, he was able to score 14 goals and recorded 34 points in 46 regular season games. And, as of now, he has returned to the Finnish Liiga, signing a one-year contract with Tappara.
