Early life

Leonard, his father, played National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) college basketball for Florida A&M before going on to play professionally in Europe and New Zealand before becoming a coach.
Leonard was a standout for the Otago Nuggets, finishing his career as the franchise’s all-time leader in points, rebounds, and steals. He is also the fourth most prolific scorer in NZNBL history.
Tracey King, King’s mother, is from New Zealand and played NCAA basketball for Duquesne. Tylah, his older sister, played for Pacific in the NCAA.
John Paul, King’s maternal grandfather, has been a basketball coach in Otago for over 50 years and is one of the region’s most prominent basketball figures.

Career
King joined the NBA Global Academy, a training facility at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, in January 2019. In the NBL1, an Australian semi-professional league, he played for the BA Centre of Excellence.
Later that year, he played for Queensland South in the Australian Under-18 Championships, where he led the competition in scoring with 26.6 points per game.
In July 2019, he averaged a tournament-high 19.2 points per game at the NBA Academy Games in Atlanta, Georgia. Likewise, On 12 March 2020, he signed with the Cairns Taipans of the National Basketball League (NBL).
He turned down offers from several NCAA Division I programs, including Arizona, Baylor, Oregon, and Virginia, by joining the NBL. King averaged 6.2 points and 2.4 rebounds in the 2020–21 season.
He was traded to the Adelaide 36ers on July 14, 2021, for the final year of his Next Stars contract.
