Hedberg was found deceased in his Livingston, New Jersey, suite at The Westminster Hotel on March 30, 2005. Some people thought his death was an April Fools’ Day joke because it was reported on April 1.
At first, it was thought that he had a congenital heart problem, but in December 2005, the medical examiner’s office in New Jersey announced that he had died unintentionally from “multiple drug toxicity,” which included cocaine and heroin.
In Woodbury, Minnesota, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Hedberg was laid to rest.
