Megan Anna Rapinoe is a professional soccer player who currently plays as a midfielder/winger for the Reign FC in the National Women’s Soccer League. Megan won the Gold at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup with US Women’s national team.

Education

She attended Foothill High School, where she competed in track as a freshman, basketball as a freshman, and senior. She was on the honor roll every semester of high school and was named Parade and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American as a junior and senior.

After high school, she and her fraternal twin sister, Rachael attended the University of Portland in Portland, Oregon on full scholarships.

Career and Professional Life

The Chicago Red Stars selected her as the second overall choice in the 2009 WPS Draft. She spent 2 seasons at Red Stars and was named to the league’s All-Star Team in 2009. Further, she signed with the expansion team Philadelphia Independence in December 2010 after the Red Stars ceased operations.

She signed with the Australian W-League team Sydney FC in October 2011 as a guest player for two games. Therefore, she signed with Seattle Sounders Women during the summer of 2012 and also with French club Olympique Lyonnais for six months in January 2013.

She previously played for the USA U16 and U19 national soccer teams. And created her senior debut for the US women’s senior team in a friendly match against Ireland in July 2006. Unfortunately, she missed the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2008 Beijing Olympics due to separate ACL injuries.

In the 2011, FIFA Women’s World Cup quarterfinals against Brazil, she provided the 122nd-minute assist that resulted in an associate equalizer goal. Eventually, Team USA defeated Brazil in penalty combat. Team USA ended as a runner-up in the competition behind Japan.

She made the USA win a gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. They defeated Japan 2-1 in the final. She became the fifth American woman in history to play in a Champions League final when Lyon faced German side VFL Wolfsburg on twenty-three May 2013. Hence, she signed Seattle Reign FC in 2014. Despite only playing approximately half of the 2013 season, she was the Reign’s leading scorer with 5 goals.

Activism

She earned national attention for kneeling during the national anthem at an international match in September 2016 in solidarity with NFL Colin Kaepernick.  She stood in silence for the national anthem during the 2015 World Cup. Similarly, she talked about the use of stadiums with artificial turf, its first use in a senior women’s or men’s World Cup tournament.

Likewise, she has been linked to the women’s team’s equal pay complaint to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission since at least 2016. In March 2019, Rapinoe, along with 27 other of her US Women’s soccer teammates filed a lawsuit against the United States Soccer Federation accusing it of gender discrimination. This begins with the fight for equal pay.

Philanthropy

Apart from that, Megan Rapinoe has done philanthropic work for the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee. She became an ambassador for Athlete Ally, a nonprofit organization that focuses on ending homophobia and transphobia in sports in 2013.

In September 2017, she along with U.S. teammate Alex Morgan became part of a group of soccer players who signed up for the “Common Goal” campaign created by Juan Mata of Manchester United. As members of the campaign, they provide one percent of their wages in support of other soccer-related charities. She and Morgan were the first two women players to sign on to the campaign.

Megan Rapinoe bulks up national attention for kneeling during the national anthem at an international match against Thailand in September 2016. Before, she knelt during the national anthem in the Chicago game against the Red Stars in the same month.
