As an offensive tackle in the Big East Conference in 1992, he was named to the First Team.

He received a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Miami School of Business in 1993 before returning to the university in 2001 to pursue his master’s degree. Coaching Career

His coaching career got its start at the University of Miami, where he worked as head football coach Butch Davis’ graduate assistant from 1998 to 2000. He served as Greg Schiano’s tight ends and offensive line coach at Rutgers University from 2001 to 2003. From 2004 to 2006, he returned to Miami and worked with Larry Coker as the offensive line and tight ends coach for three seasons.

He chose to become Florida International University’s new head coach in 2007. Later, he was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year and guided the team to the championship. The coach moved to the University of Alabama in 2013 to serve as the offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator, and associate head coach.

Mario transferred to the University of Oregon in 2017 and helped the team win the Pac-12 North Division and the championship. After going 11-2 during the regular season, winning the North division, defeating Utah in the Conference Championship, and earning a trip to the Rose Bowl, he was chosen by the Associated Press as the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2019.

He worked with offensive line coach Alex Mirabal to develop All-American Penei Sewell, who later won the Outland Trophy as the nation’s top interior lineman. A finalist for the 2019 Joe Moore Award for the best overall team in the nation was the offensive line unit from Oregon.

Oregon defeated the Wisconsin Badgers in the Rose Bowl to cap up the postseason. He replaced Manny Diaz as head coach of the University of Miami Hurricanes on December 6, 2021. Moreover, he signed with the Hurricanes in a 10-year, $80 million contract.

In his coaching career, he has earned several awards and honors. AP Pac-12 Coach of the Year (2019), 247Sports National Recruiter of the Year (2015), and Sun Belt Coach of the Year (2010) are some of his awards.
