In January 1995, his elder brother, Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, signed two decrees naming him “Crown Prince of Dubai.” After his brother’s death in January 2006, Mohammed became the ruler of Dubai.
He was then named Vice President of the UAE by the ‘Federal National Council,’ and President Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan nominated him as Prime Minister of the UAE in February 2006.

In February 2010, he launched ‘Vision 2021.’ It was a plan that was recognized as a masterwork in terms of long-term strategy and national goals.
