Early Life

Mac DeMarco was born in Duncan, British Columbia, Canada, on April 30, 1990. Currently, he is 33 years old and has the sun sign of Taurus. He was born as Vernor Winfield MacBriare Smith IV and is also known as MacBriare Samuel Lanyon DeMarco. Moreover, he is a Canadian by nationality and belongs to Italian-Canadian ethnicity.

He was born to Mac Smith III and Agnes DeMarco. His family relocated to Edmonton, Alberta, shortly after his birth, where he spent the rest of his adolescence. His father left his family when Mac was five years old.

He only encountered. He came from a music-loving household. His grandmother was a well-known opera singer, and his grandfather was a saxophonist. His mother and aunt were both briefly interested in music when they were younger. As a result, Mac was deeply influenced by music as a child.

He attended McKernan School for junior high school. He began playing guitar about this period, with tuition from his grandmother. During high school, he was a member of numerous bands, including the indie rock band the Meat Cleavers, the alternative R&B group the Sound of Love, and the post-punk band Outdoor Miners (with current keyboardist Alec Meen), which was named after the song “Outdoor Miner” by English rock band Wire.

He began his career as a background musician after graduating from Strathcona High School in Edmonton in 2008. He then relocated to Vancouver.

Professional Career

In 2009, Mac DeMarco released a self-produced album, “Heat Wave,” as a part of the indie rock project Makeout Videotape. He was signed to Unfamiliar Records, toured with Vancouver band Japandroids in 2009, and was accompanied by Alex Calder and Jen Clement.

Moreover, he relocated from Vancouver to Montreal in 2011 to begin recording as a solo artist. When he couldn’t find work as a musician, he did medical experiments for money and worked on a road paving crew.

Captured Tracks announced the signing of DeMarco on January 9, 2012. He released an LP named “Rock and Roll Night Club,” in early 2012. He experimented a lot with his approach, and the four-single-length album included some mellow tracks and skits.

Debut Album “2”

The record’s popularity gave the label enough confidence to instruct Mac to go ahead with his first full-length album, “2.” It was an instant hit. The record was named ‘Best New Music’ by Pitchfork. One of the album’s songs, ‘Moving Like Mike,’ was acquired by American retailer ‘Target’ for use in one of their advertisements.

During the year 2013, he spent touring around with his album. In April 2014, he released his second studio album, “Salad Days.” It earned strong critical acclaim and debuted at the 30th spot on the ‘Billboard 200’ chart. After having another success with his second album, he set out on a tour across South America, North America, and Europe.

In August 2015, he released a mini-album “Another One.” It was a significant change from Mac’s regular style and included love melodies. ‘Still in Rock’ named the LP as the third best of 2015. In July 2015, he released “Some Other Ones,” a 9-track instrumental album described as a “BBQ soundtrack.”

Recent Works

In January 2017, he announced the release of his third studio album, “This Old Dog.” On the same day, he released two songs from the album. The album was released in May and gained widespread critical praise.

He released his fourth studio album “Here Comes the Cowboy” in May 2019. The album received polarized reviews upon release from critics and fans. Meanwhile, its track “Heart to Heart” became a viral hit on TikTok.

In January 2023, he released an instrumental album, “Five Easy Hot Dogs.” It received “generally favorable reviews”, according to the review aggregator Metacritic. He released his first compilation album titled “One Wayne G” in April 2023.
