There were rumours that Johnston had been pushed into the marriage, which he denied. Meanwhile, their child Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston was born in December 2008.
The couple split up in March 2009, ending their engagement. They announced two months later that their relationship was back on track and that they would raise their child together. Bristol later filed a case for sole custody of the child as well as child support.
