Leon Mobley started his career as a child actor on PBS Television’s show titled Zoom which aired in 1973. He joined the Bokan-Deye Dance Company and studied under the directorship of Senegalese master drummer Ibrahim Camara in 1977. In 1991 he went to South Africa and performed with returning exiles Letta Mbulu, Caiphus Semenya, and Hugh Masekela.
From 1979 to 1981, he studied and performed in Surinam, South America, Trinidad & Tobago, and throughout the West Indies. Later, he continued his studies in Senegal and Gambia in 1982. After that, he traveled to Japan in 1987 and 1992 where he taught and performed West African Drumming and Dancing.

During this time, he visited the home of Kodo a percussion group Sado Island in a cultural exchange program. Moreover, he also performed and lectured throughout the US and toured Germany, Italy, and Israel.
He produced, recorded, conducted clinics, and performed with his group Da Lion while traveling to these countries. Moreover, he became a signature series artist with Remo who manufactured and marketed the Leon Mobley custom-designed African drums since 1983.
He taught at community centres and conducted workshops and school tours at Berklee College of Music while he was in Boston. Besides that, he worked as a musical director at a private school Paige Academy in Roxbury, Massachusetts. In 1986, he moved to Los Angeles and he continued to teach at UCLA, Parks and Recreation, and Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Theater.
He founded Da Lion and Djimbe West African Drummers and Dancers to preserve African cultures and present traditional West African-American dance and music to North American audiences. Moreover, he is the musical and artistic director of these groups.
