During his time at Korea University, he played for the university’s basketball team and made significant contributions to their success. His college education provided him with the opportunity to enhance his basketball skills and compete at a high level in the university basketball league.

Career and Professional Life

His journey in basketball began during his early years when he started playing in elementary school, inspired by his father. Moving on to his college career, he joined Korea University. During his freshman year, he played a critical role in Korea University’s victory in the MBC Cup, ending a seventeen-year drought and earning him the MVP title.

In 2015, he declared himself as a prospect for the NBA Draft but went undrafted. Undeterred by this setback, he returned to Korea University to continue his college career. During his junior year, he teamed up with Kang Sang-Jae, forming the “Twin Towers” due to their height advantage. Together, they led Korea University to an unexpected triumph over a Sangmu team composed of experienced KBL players fulfilling their mandatory military service.

His professional career gained momentum when he became one of the highly regarded prospects in the 2016 KBL rookie draft, alongside Kang and Choi Jun-Yong. His exceptional skills made him a strong contender for the first pick of the first round, eventually leading to his selection as the first overall pick by Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus. Although he faced a slow start to his rookie season, he displayed his potential by delivering an impressive performance of 24 points and 18 rebounds against the Changwon LG Sakers in January.

However, injuries posed challenges for him in 2018. In February, he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, prematurely ending his season. Determined to make a comeback, he dedicated the offseason to rehabilitation and managed to recover in time for the 2018-19 season. Unfortunately, he encountered another setback when he fractured his left patella during a December game, necessitating surgery and ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

In November 2020, he was involved in a trade between Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus and Goyang Orion Orions. He traded with the Orion Orions in exchange for Choi Jin-soo, marking a new chapter in his professional journey.

Throughout his career, he also represented the South Korean national team. He received his first call-up to the senior national team while still in college and participated in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship. Also, he had the privilege of competing in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup and the Asian Games, where the South Korean team achieved gold for the first time since 2002.  Unfortunately, he missed out on the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup due to injury.
