His journey in basketball began during his early years when he started playing in elementary school, inspired by his father. Moving on to his college career, he joined Korea University. During his freshman year, he played a critical role in Korea University’s victory in the MBC Cup, ending a seventeen-year drought and earning him the MVP title.
In 2015, he declared himself as a prospect for the NBA Draft but went undrafted. Undeterred by this setback, he returned to Korea University to continue his college career.
