In 2006, he became the chairman of the conservative think tank Bow Group. Moreover, in 2011, he co-wrote a book Gridlock Nation with Jonathan Dupont about the causes and solutions to traffic congestion in the United Kingdom.
In the 2008 London Assembly election, he came sixth on the Conservative list of candidates, but he was not elected because the Conservatives received only three London-wide list seats. Furthermore, in January 2010, he was chosen as the Conservative candidate for Spelthorne.
Later, he called the Help to Buy housing scheme “inflationary” in 2013. Besides that, in 2014, his book, War and Gold: A 500-Year History of Empires, Adventures, and Debt, was published. He was also re-elected with an increased majority of 14,152 votes in the 2015 general election.
In addition, he was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond following the 2017 general election. Also, in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election, he supported Boris Johnson.
