She decided to work in the hotel business when she left the army. One of her earliest jobs in New York was delivering food and beverages to rock and roll bands. She worked at Aqua, a now-defunct restaurant in San Francisco, during her time there. She started cooking at Spruce after moving to Chicago, Illinois.
