Early Life

Kenneth Lonergan was born in the Bronx, New York, United States, on October 16, 1962. He holds American nationality and belongs to a mixed ethnicity.  According to the astrological chart, he has a birth sign of Libra and is 61 years old as of 2024.

He attended the Walden School, a now defunct, highly progressive private school in Manhattan with a strong drama program. During his school year, he started writing. His debut play, ‘The Rennings Children,’ was chosen for the Stephen Sondheim-founded Young Playwrights, Inc. Young Playwrights Festival in 1982, while he was still a student.
He enrolled at Wesleyan University, where he studied playwriting and directing. Moreover, he graduated from the NYU Playwriting Program. Additionally, he attended HB Studio in New York City.

After completing his graduation, Kenneth Lonergan co-founded the theatre company Naked Angels. He supported himself by writing scripts for industrial films for companies that included Fuji Films and Weight Watchers.

‘This Is Our Youth,’ an extension of his earlier one-act piece Betrayal by Everyone, was his first successful play. It premiered off-Broadway in 1996, with Mark Ruffalo in the lead role, as a narrative about dissatisfied young people in the early 1980s.

His second play, ‘The Waverly Gallery,’ about a young man whose grandmother, a gallery owner, is suffering from dementia, premiered off-Broadway in 2000 and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. ‘Lobby Hero,’ centered on a security officer at an apartment complex, premiered in 2001.

All three of these plays were eventually presented on Broadway, with ‘This Is Our Youth’ in 2014-15, ‘Lobby Hero’ in 2018, and ‘The Waverly Gallery’ in 2018-19 receiving Tony Award nominations for best revival. Later, he wrote and directed ‘The Starry Messenger,’ which premiered in 2009 and starred Matthew Broderick as an astronomy instructor wanting to escape the monotony of his existence.

Lonergan’s screenwriting career began with the gangland comedy “Analyze This” (1999). He was later hired to write “The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle” (2000). “For You Can Count on Me” (2000), he directed his script; the film, which was executive produced by Martin Scorsese, went on to win and be nominated for multiple writing awards.

Additionally, he helped write the script for “Gangs of New York” (2002). “Margaret,” his second film as a writer/director, was shot in 2005 and starred Anna Paquin, Matt Damon, Matthew Broderick, and J. Smith-Cameron.

Moreover, the film was in post-production for nearly five years, with Lonergan, the producers, and different editors unable to agree on the final cut, resulting in multiple legal issues. In 2011, it was eventually released. “Margaret” was placed 31st in a BBC poll of the greatest films of the 21st century in 2016.

Following that, he wrote and directed “Manchester by the Sea” (2016). It received incredible critical acclaim and box office success. He also appeared in the film as a pedestrian. Later, he wrote the TV miniseries “Howards End” (2017-18), based on the novel by E.M. Forster.

To this date, Lonergan has won a total of two awards and 14 nominations. He had four Academy Award nominations, three for Best Original Screenplay for “You Can Count on Me” (2000), “Gangs of New York” (2002), and “Manchester by the Sea” (2016), the latter of which he won. He has also been nominated for three Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Play, for “This is Our Youth” in 2015, “Lobby Hero” in 2018, and “The Waverly Gallery” in 2019.
