‘This Is Our Youth,’ an extension of his earlier one-act piece Betrayal by Everyone, was his first successful play. It premiered off-Broadway in 1996, with Mark Ruffalo in the lead role, as a narrative about dissatisfied young people in the early 1980s.

His second play, ‘The Waverly Gallery,’ about a young man whose grandmother, a gallery owner, is suffering from dementia, premiered off-Broadway in 2000 and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. ‘Lobby Hero,’ centered on a security officer at an apartment complex, premiered in 2001.

All three of these plays were eventually presented on Broadway, with ‘This Is Our Youth’ in 2014-15, ‘Lobby Hero’ in 2018, and ‘The Waverly Gallery’ in 2018-19 receiving Tony Award nominations for best revival.
