Karen Pence

Karen Pence is an American School Teacher and Political Wife. Karen Pence is popular for being the second Lady of the United States as the wife of Vice President Mike Pence. Previously, she was able to serve as the First Lady of Indiana during her husband’s term as governor between 2013 and 2017.

Early Life and Childhood

Karen Pence was born on January 1, 1957, in McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas, USA. She is 67 years old and is under the astrological sign, Capricorn. She holds American nationality and her full name is Karen Sue Pence.

Her father’s name is John M. Batten and her mother’s name is Lillian. Sadly, both of her parents have passed away. And, her father was a United Airlines official. Her parents separated and divorced when she was very young.

Then, her mother went on to marry Bernard Barcio in the year 1967. Talking about her childhood, she grew up in the Broad Ripple Village neighbourhood of Indianapolis.

Karen Pence – Education

Regarding Pence’s educational background and qualifications, she attended and graduated as valedictorian from Bishop Chatard High School.

She then went on to attend nearby Butler University where she studied to become a teacher, and minored in art. She was able to receive both a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and a Master of Science (M.S.) in elementary education from Butler University.

Career and Professional Life

Karen Pence went on to teach at John Strange Elementary, Acton Elementary, Fall Creek Elementary, and the Orchard School, all in Indianapolis. And, after giving birth to her first child, she went on to take a class in watercolour painting. This then led to a career painting portraits of houses as well as historic buildings.

And, in a year, she completed as many as thirty-five paintings, some on commission and selling others at local art fairs. On the other hand, when her husband was in Congress, she was able to work at Immanuel Christian School. It is a private Christian school in Springfield, Virginia, as an arts teacher for twelve years.

Likewise, she was the first lady of Indiana during her husband’s term as governor of the state from the year 2013 to 2017. And, in her first year of the role, she was able to establish the Indiana First Lady’s Charitable Foundation to “promote individuals and organizations that encourage children, families, and the arts”, also offering grants and scholarships.

Also, in the year 2015, she began a small business, “That’s My Towel!’ Charm”. This business makes metal charms for attaching to towels so they can be more easily identified when among others. However, the business was put on hold when her husband became a vice presidential candidate.

Then, on January 20, 2017, Pence went on to become the second lady of the United States, succeeding Jill Biden. During this time, she went on to work to raise awareness of art therapy, to which she was first exposed when visiting a Washington hospital during her husband’s tenure as a congressman. She also visited the campus of Florida State University to highlight the university’s art therapy program, which dates back to the 1990s.

She even went on to continue to raise awareness of honey bee habitat destruction and the importance of pollination in 2017 by having a beehive installed at the official vice presidential residence, Number One Observatory Circle. Moreover, Pence returned as a part-time art teacher for Immanuel Christian School in January 2019.

Relationship Status

Karen Pence met her first husband, John Steven Whitaker while they were in high school. They went on to tie the knot on August 4, 1978, in Brewster County, Texas, but later divorced. Her first husband was a medical student during their marriage.

Then, Pence was able to meet Mike Pence who is her second and current husband while she was playing guitar at Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. The church is a Catholic church in Indianapolis they both attended. And, after about nine months of dating, they became engaged in August 1984. They finally tied the knot on June 8, 1985.

The couple has three children together and their names are Michael, Charlotte, and Audrey.
