Karan Adani began working for Adani Ports & SEZ Limited (APSEZ) in 2009. Moreover, he took over the company’s operations in 2016. He oversaw an acquisition effort for Tamil Nadu’s Kattupalli port in 2018.

The port became the tenth port in the APSEZ network after being bought from Larsen and Toubro.

He was appointed to lead the airport projects for the Adani Group in 2019, including those for the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, and the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.

He also led the Jaipur International Airport, the Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, the International Airport of Mangalore, and the International Airport of Trivandrum.

When Karan Adani was 18 years old, his desire to succeed in business led him to move from Ahmedabad to Mumbai. The young man had only a few hundred rupees, but he was determined to succeed.

He started as a diamond sorter for Mahindra Brothers and after a few years, he built his own diamond brokerage company.

He was a billionaire by the age of 20 due to the success of his business. At this point, Gautam Adani’s older brother had just bought a plastic plant in Ahmedabad and requested Gautam’s assistance in running it. He started working with his brother after he got back to Ahmedabad.

Moreover, he quickly started trading in commodities by importing Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) which is a crucial raw material for making plastic.

He visited South Korea and negotiated a deal to import PVC. He founded Adani Exports Limited in 1988. (now known as the Adani Enterprises Ltd). Before slowly expanding, the company first engaged in agricultural products and power.

His business was boosted by the economic and liberalization reforms of 1991, which also saw a rise in sales and earnings for his company. Moreover, his company was able to grow quickly due to the welcoming company setting. The Gujarati government issued an offer to private businesses to manage the Mundra Port in 1993, and it was approved in 1995.

The Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited afterward took over the operation that had originally been carried out by Mundra Port & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ).

It is now India’s largest private multi-port operator. The Adani Group’s affiliate in the electricity sector, Adani Power Limited, was established in 1996 by Gautam Adani.

The company is the biggest private power generator in India and the country’s biggest solar power generator.

Karan Adani won the $6 billion global solar auction by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) in May 2020. Adani Green will take on the 8000MW photovoltaic power plant project, while Adani Solar will add 2000MW of additional solar cell and module production capacity.

The second-busiest airport in India after Delhi, Mumbai International Airport, was bought by him in September 2020 for a 74 percent market share. In February 2022, he passed Mukesh Ambani to take the title of Asia’s richest person.

Charitable works

Karan Adani is involved in charitable work through the Adani Foundation. In addition to Gujarat, the foundation works in several other states and focuses on initiatives that support rural infrastructure development, sustainable livelihood opportunities, and education.

His wife is the head of the Adani Vidya Mandir which is an Ahmedabad school that only admits students whose parents make less than Rs 1 lakh per year.

The organization has a unique program for assisting fishermen and gives 500 fishermen in the coastal taluka financial assistance for the purchase of fishing gear. The children of fishermen are given access to educational opportunities.

To establish a skills training center in Gujarat to provide skill-related courses in retail, hospitality, security, construction, and engineering, Adani Foundation teamed up with IndiaSkills which is a joint venture in vocational training, and City & Guilds, one of the top providers of work-related assessment and qualifications.

Karan Adani earned The Economic Times Award (Category: Emerging Company) in 2014, on behalf of Adani Ports & SEZ Limited. In 2014, the Adani Foundation, the Adani Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility arm, received the 3rd Annual Greentech CSR Award.
