Early Life

Kang Ha-neul was born on February 21, 1990, and he is currently 34 years old. He hails from Busan, South Korea, and his birth name is Kim Ha-neul, written in Korean as 김하늘.

Kang Ha-neul is written in Korean as 강하늘 and it can also be pronounced as Gang Ha-neul. His name “Ha-neul” means “sky” in his native language.

Talking about his family, Ha-neul’s father was a folk singer who taught him how to sing and play the guitar at a young age.

Both of Ha-neu;’s parents were involved in the South Korean entertainment industry. Further, he also has a younger brother who has also joined the show business.

During his childhood, he was overweight and became conscious of his obesity. Ha-neul then started regular workouts and a strict diet to get into shape by the time he finished high school.

Later on, Ha-neul received his degree in Theatre from Chung-Ang University.

Likewise, during his university days, Ha-neul took an active part in the university cultural activities.

Professionally, Kang Ha-neul is a popular South Korean actor. Ha-neul is most popular for his roles in TV dramas The Heirs, Angel Eyes, Misaeng: Incomplete Life,

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, and When the Camellia Blooms among many others. The actor is also famous for his roles in films like Mourning Grave,

Twenty, Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet, New Trial, and Midnight Runners among many.

The young actor also received the “Best Actor award” at the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards. In the year 2020, he ranked 23rd in Forbes Korea Power Celebrity annual list.

Talking about the beginning of his career, he wanted to follow in his parent’s footsteps and become an actor.

Hence, at the young age of 16 years, he appeared in South Korean theatre as Jang Young-shil in the musical The Celestial Watch. This was his first performance as an actor.

The following year, he took time out from his studies. It was to act in the TV serial My Mom! Super Mom! and also in the play Carpe Diem.

The actor also appeared in the Fly to the Sky music video Still Pretty Today while Ha-neul was in college.

Rise to Popularity

Kang Ha-neul began his career in musical theatre. Some notable projects are Thrill Me, Prince Puzzle, Black Mary Poppins, and Assassins. The actor later shifted to the screen and starred in various TV dramas.

The year 2015 was a busy year for him. He appeared in three films the same year. They are a musical film C’est si bon, a period film Empire of Lust, and a coming-of-age film Twenty.

For his role in Twenty, Ha-neul bagged several Best New Actor awards and nominations.

In the year 2016, he starred in the black and white biographical period film Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet. In this project, he played the titular role of poet Yun Dong-ju.

This project won him a “Best Actor” nomination at the 25th Buil Film Awards and 4th Wildflower Film Awards.

The actor also appeared in the romantic comedy film Like for Likes. For this project, he played the role of a young songwriter who suffers a hearing disability.

The same year, Ha-neul also co-starred in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. For this, he played the role of 8th Prince Wang Wook.

This role earned him an “Excellence Award” at the 2016 SBS Drama Awards.

Further, for this project, Ha-neul worked alongside various well-known actors like Lee Joon-gi, Lee Ji-eun (IU), Kim San-ho, Hong Jong-hyun, Byun Baek-hyun, Nam Joo-hyuk, and Ji Soo among others.

In 2017, Kang Ha-neul starred in the film New Trial in which he acted as a young man who spent a decade in prison after an abusive investigation for a crime he did not commit.

He worked alongside actor Park Seo-joon in the action comedy film Midnight Runners in which he played a nerdy student of the Korean National Police University.

The same year, Ha-neul also appeared in the mystery thriller film Forgotten alongside Kim Mu-yeol.

Furthermore, in September 2018, he co-starred with fellow actor Ji Chang-wook and k-pop idol Kim Sung-kyu in the military musical Shinheung Military Academy.

His excellent performance as Paldo earned him a nomination for the “Best Actor” at the 7th Yegreen Musical Awards.

Likewise, in 2019, the actor made a comeback in the entertainment industry in When the Camellia Blooms working alongside actress Gong Hyo-jin

For this, he received numerous awards including Best Actor (TV) at the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards in 2020.

He followed this with his theatrical performance in Fantasy Tale in January 2020. Similarly, on December 10, 2019, TH Company confirmed his comeback to the silver screen with Rain and Your Story. TH Company is his new agency.

Military Service

Kang Ha-neul began his mandatory military service on 11 September 2017 at Nonsan Korean Army Training Center.

During the completion ceremony on 24 October, they recognized him for his exemplary performance during basic training.

Then on 22 February 2019, he was appointed as honorary ambassador of the Military Manpower Administration (MMA).

This ceremony took place at the Air Force Hall in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. As an honorary ambassador, he participated in events organized by the MMA until December 2019. The actor then was discharged on 23 May 2019.
