Josh Benson

Josh Benson is a popular English football player. Josh Benson recently plays for Barnsley, as a midfielder. Moreover, he played for Burnley and Arsenal in the past before making his professional debut on loan with Grimsby Town.

Early Life and Childhood

Josh Benson was born on December 5, 1999, in Brentwood, England. He is currently 24 years old (as of 2024). He was born to his father John Benson and his mother Vikki Benson. Likewise, he has three siblings named Jolie, Halle, and Rocco.

Josh is the oldest among his three siblings. He was raised in Essex along with his parents and siblings. Josh holds English nationality but his ethnicity is unknown. According to his birthdate, he was born under the birth sign Sagittarius.

Early Career

He went to Herringham Primary School in Chadwell St. Mary, where he was chosen to play for the Thurrock District team after a trial. When he was just seven years old, an Arsenal scout saw him competing for Thurrock in a tournament and invited him for a trial.

Other teams, including Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Millwall, were also interested. He started working out with Arsenal when he was eight years old, but he wasn’t immediately a star player for the team. He was one of three players who were left from the squad for a trip to Spain.

Furthermore, he later developed into one of the team’s better players, captaining the youth teams, and when he was 16 years old, he received a two-year scholarship. He suffered a knee injury during the first year of his scholarship that sidelined him for four months.[4] In the spring of 2018, he received word from Arsenal that once his scholarship expired, they would not be extending him a professional contract.

Burnley

After his release, Burnley of the Premier League invited him for a trial after learning of his availability. Michael Duff, the club’s under-23 manager, convinced him to join in the summer of 2018 after a brief trial. He signed a two-year professional contract after a clear path to the first team was laid out. A few months later, Duff left to become the manager of Cheltenham Town, and Steve Stone took his place. Despite this, the two men got along well.

Furthermore, Benson frequently began working out with the first team and was named to the squad for a January 2019 away game at Old Trafford against Manchester United, but he was not used as a substitute. He played a significant role for Burnley during their trip to Portugal for their preseason games for the 2019–20 season. He anticipated being a regular member of the first-team squad after preseason, but an injury slowed his advancement. Josh nevertheless remained a staple in the under-23 team and occasionally served as captain.

Moreover, he joined EFL League Two team Grimsby Town on loan on January 18, 2020, where he teamed up with fellow under-23 player Anthony Glennon in order to gain some first-team experience. The transfer happened as a result of manager Ian Holloway’s previous scouting work with Burnley’s chief operating officer Matt Williams at Blackpool.

After Grimsby was in desperate need of a left-back, Williams suggested Glennon, and Benson followed a week later after Holloway had seen him play a few times. In February 2020, he scored his first goal as a professional, giving his team a 2-1 victory over Morecambe by scoring the game-winning goal in the 86th minute. The season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so the loan only lasted two months, but he still left a good impression on Holloway by scoring twice in 11 appearances. Benson joined Burnley’s bench for a few matches after the Premier League resumed in July, but he didn’t play in any of them.

Burnley triggered a one-year contract extension on his agreement in the summer of 2020. Holloway called Burnley in August 2020 to request that Benson and Glennon return to Grimbsy on loan. EFL Championship teams made offers for him to go out on loan once more, but Burnley chose to keep him in the organization due to the small size of the squad and lack of transfer activity.

In an EFL Cup match against Sheffield United on September 17, 2020, he made his first team debut, coming on as a substitute for Ashley Westwood as the Clarets advanced on penalties. He made his full debut in that same competition a week later, when Burnley defeated Millwall 2-0 at The Den.

He replaced the injured Josh Brownhill in the starting lineup for Burnley’s Premier League debut on November 28, 2020, when they traveled to Manchester City at the City of Manchester Stadium. Sean Dyche, the manager, praised his performance as “terrific” despite the team’s 5-0 loss despite the fact that he played the full 90 minutes. Steve Stone claimed that arrangements had been made to loan him out during the January transfer window a few days after the game. After five first-team appearances, he signed a new contract in December 2020 that ran through June 2023 with an additional 12-month extension in the club’s favor.
