From a young age, Nyjer Morgan was interested in sports. In his early years, he used to play ice hockey and reached the Major Junior level with the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League in 1999-2000.

Baseball career

He focused on baseball the following year and was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 33rd round of the 2002 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft. He made one of his first big plays on September 14, 2007, when he made a catch that helped the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Milwaukee Brewers.

In 2011, he batted 304 and finished third in the National League in hit by pitch (14) and sacrifice hits (14).  Later, he signed a contract to play for the Yokohama DeNA BayStars and batted .294 with 11 home runs in 108 games for the BayStars.

He announced that he had signed a minor league deal with the Cleveland Indians. Which included an invitation to Spring training, on January 14 and was released on the 5th of August, 2014.
