In 2015, he secured his maiden major title, the German Darts Grand Prix, setting the stage for a series of victories – the UK Open, the Players Championship, and the World Cup of Darts. He became the runner-up after losing to Darren Webster in a 6-3 loss in round one of the 2016 Cash Converters Players Championship Finals.

PDC World Championship debut

In 2017, he made his PDC World Championship debut and came from a set down to beat fellow Welshman Gerwyn Price 3–1 in the first round. However, he failed in the third round after losing 4–1 to Ian White in the second round. 

He won his first PDC ranking title with Players Championship 22, defeating James Wilson 6-1 in the final. Moreover, he advanced to his first PDC major final, the 2017 Players Championship Finals.

His run to the final propelled him into the top 32 of the PDC Order of Merit, earning him a seed for the 2018 PDC World Darts Championship, where he was defeated by fellow countryman Jamie Lewis. He went on to win the 2018 Austrian Darts Open, defeating Gerwyn Price 8-5 in the final.

Clayton, a three-time PDC ranking championship winner, was nominated as a ‘challenger’ for the 2020 Premier League night in Cardiff but was defeated 7-1 by an inspired Michael Smith.

Recent Career

He began his 2020 season by defeating world number one Michael van Gerwen 10-6 in the first round of the 2020 Masters. In addition, he went on to win the 2020 PDC World Cup of Darts for Wales alongside Gerwyn Price, defeating the English team of Rob Cross and Michael Smith 3-0.

He went to the 2021 BoyleSport World Grand Prix and reached the final after beating Callan Rydz, José de Sousa, Krzysztof Ratajski, and Danny Noppert along the way. In the final, he defeated World No. 1 Gerwyn Price 5-1, winning his third major tournament of the year.

In the 2022 World Championship, he beat Keane Barry and Gabriel Clemens before falling to eventual finalist Michael Smith 4-3. Moreover, he advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2023 World Championship after defeating Josh Rock 4-3.
